One short question: Is there an easy way to station marksdwarves right behind fortifications?

I built that fancy castle wall with watchtowers, but the marksdwarves usually stand around in the middle of towers, 2-3 tiles away from the fortifications and unable to see or shoot anything, even when I station the squad right at the wall. I know about making squads of one and stationing the individually, but that's too much hassle for me.

Try making a patrol that route that hugs the fortification.

I'm trying to get my dwarves to disarm some caged goblins by marking their weapons for dumping and they don't seem to get around to doing it. I have a garbage zone designated and everything -- any thoughts?

Did you claim the weapons before dumping them?

Try making a patrol that route that hugs the fortification.

Thanks, that did it. With a regular patrol route, they'd still go away from the fortifications from time to time but with an added high traffic designation, they're actually going where I want them to.

i think a 1 tile burrow right next the fortification will also work, if the squad is assigned a "defend burrow" order

So, I have a problem with hippos.

16 adults and 53 (!) calfs, they're in the water two "floors" down.

What would be the easiest way to get rid of them/kill them?

Can you build a long hallway filled with traps, then lead them in?
Collapse the ceiling down on them?

I've tried that, they didn't want to go.

Atm I'm thinking of trying to make my marksdwarfs shoot them.

I really don't want to collapse anything as it is almost in my fortress.

The civ screen says that I only have dwarves as nearby civilizations (but the embark said there were elves and stuff... liars)
So... I will never get sieged?

EDIT: Oh, my fortress is in the first season yet. Maybe it's because I haven't met any other civilization?

That's right, you'll have to meet them before they show up on the civ screen.

Suffocation?

Hello, thanks in advance for any advice.

Throughout my fortress, pets, strays, children, and some adults are suffocating. They show up with spine damage, then die. Why? It's spreading.

Have you fought/killed a forgotten beast? Have you breached the caverns?

Most likely a forgotten beast with a syndrome that causes nervous syndrome necrosis got in. If you've fought one check for pools of forgotten beast blood or extract that could be causing the syndrome and deal with them. (There are some threads around here that go into detail)
