I cannot do that. No Dwarf can get to the spot to perform those actions. I used to build a down stair, then an upstair underneath it. Now, it says I can't build the upstair because it's blocked.

Are you trying to build an up stair, or designate one to be mined out?  If there's open space there you can build an up stair, but if it's solid rock you need to use the designation menu to designate an up stair to be mined out.

Will a chained animal/dwarf still be able to swim in 4/7 water or below?

Is it confirmed? So a copper crossbow firing copper bolts don't work at 2/3 x 2/3 = 4/9 but at 2/3 efficiency? This is MAJOR for me! :)

The Hotkey tool allows you to do exactly this, linking specific map locations to function keys.  Press 'h' to access the hotkey menu.

Ergo copper is the preferred metal for crossbows, having a higher density than the other options.

Or you could opt for a marksdwarf squad equiped with a bone crossbow shooting bone bolts, armored in pieces of bone armor. Asides from the lacking protection of the armor it works fairly well and ofcourse is just morbidly cool.


I do believe chained animals will have no problem sitting in anything below 4/7. I'm inclined to guess 4/7 shouldn't be a problem either but don't quote me on that.

The main risk with having chained animals semi-submerged in water is that the water movement can push the animal off the chain.  Moving water can push animals.  Chains will do nothing to prevent animals from being pushed, and if the animal is pushed more than one square away from the chain it will detach from the chain.

I never realized copper was heavier than bronze, iron or steel. Interesting if true. Edit; I read the raws on the magmawiki. The Solid_Density of copper s indeed higher than that of iron, bronze or steel. :D

It is, and it also has excellent (read: low) impact elasticity.  However the testing thread at the bottom of the wiki indicates that it doesn't seem to much matter what material you make hammers/maces from if it's not silver.

One would think a sober dwarf noble would stand out as the anomaly. Maybe sobriety is what causes the uselessness of noblehood.

Also, my question somewhere above seems to have been missed:
