How can I grow fungiwood? I flooded a big area and now there is mud on everytile but nothing happens. Do I have to do something or what?

How do I make my dwarves all stand up for themselves? I've dug as deep of the cotton candy as I am willing to risk: just enough to outfit my entire population with full armor and weapons. But now I need to know how to make them stop being little pussies. What requirements have to be met to make the transition from "runs away" to "stays and fights"?

Breach the cavern layer, and then wall it up again, or possibly make suitable entryway defenses. I like to leave it open and leave doors in rooms with nothing but the door and a cage trap. lesser things will wander in and try to destroy the wooden doors, and bigger things will take long enough destroying the door that I can trap them in with the flip of a lever.

Once the cavern is breached, things that grew there will grow in any subterranean mud.

Put them all in the military.

they are all in the military, equipped with cotton candy everything, including battle axes. So they will attack? or do I need to put them on a training schedule without a barracks?

If they're in civvie mode, they'll always run unless cornered.
If they're in militia mode, they'll always attack anything they see.

So I could have gotten my militia commander to turn around from his suicide charge into a goblin ambush simply by changing him to inactive?

*Sigh*

Add this one to the things I learned today thread.

Another fun fact, civilians with crossbows and appropriately equipped ammo will fire off a bolt or two before running.

so there's no way to make my entire fort attack anything on sight, and still have them do normal labors, and not complain about "long patrol duties"?

If I can second the crossbow armed civilian fact. I'm working on equiping every single dwarf with their own crossbow and it works like a charm.
Especially civilians in large group can do some serious damage before running.

Not automatically, but you can micromanage it by switching between inactive and active alerts..

Step 1: Make sure you have a water source, like a river or brook, before trying this. Otherwise, you're SOL.

Step 2: Make a good number of buckets.

Step 3: Go to "i" and designate the area 1 z-level above you farm/pond as a "pond/pit." Use "shift+p" to set it as a pond and set it as "not filled". Also, if its an underground farm, make sure to have at least 1 open space over where you want the water to go.

Step4: Leave the dwarfs to fill the pond until its at least at a depth of 1/7 (for a farm) or completely refilled. This might take awhile, given the dwarfy habit of taking breaks and needing to eat and sleep.
