wah, a lot of answers.
Many thanks to all of you.

As for the hunter, he had no bow, but I didn't see it as a requirement, maybe it was.

Yeah, that's definitely a requirement. Either build a bowmaker's shop and make him a crossbow or buy one off a caravan.

Also, I've got a small question: Can glass blocks function as "windows" for the purposes of making a watchtower? Reason I'm asking is I have some green glass blocks made up to use as part of my look-out tower and just wanted to make sure they'd work for what I need them to do.

No. Walls made from blocks are never see-through.

Thank you for the answer. Looks like I've got some pearlash to make and magma to go find now...

And if you're making glass windows, green glass works just as well.  No need to make pearlash.

A fell soldier dropped a number of items; one of those is a Steel Mail Shirt, which is Claimed status and is not marked for Dump or Melt.

No one comes and pick it up, despite having a non-full stockpile matching the item.

Has this anything to do with ownership?

Will try.
Also, I made the mistake of (D)umping an Armor Bin containing useful stuff. How do I move the bin, or its content, out of the Dump area?

Never mind, sorted. I (D)umped the single items inside the Bin and they were dumped outside. Then I just claimed the individual items.

Can I stop my doctors from using candy strands for stitches? (Besides refining them)

Forbid your adamantine strands when you're not planning to use them. Also ensureyou have lots of cheap thread to stock your hospital.

Ok so what's a safe way to explore further down? Build hatches and levers+mechanisms in advance? I know this is a bit greedy but i want to see magma (and get a smelter) this embark, or at least find some form of coal.... Since i might want to have an alternative to trading for coal/chopping wood and i don't trust my dwarf population to the critter caves. (i seem to be nesting in nothing but obsidian besides the occasional odd mineral/gem vein)

As soon as you pierce a cavern, floor up the hole.
You should have revealed enough to find a solid column of rock to dig down through the cavern. If not, pierce it in another place and try again.
