Depends entirely on your definition of inefficiency. Extravagant, maybe, but inefficient? :)

Your best bet is to embark in a flat heavily forested area that's part of a valley, preferably with a brook. Loads of fun and Fun, although with extreme dwarfeneering Fun can be avoided. Bonus points if you make a Terracotta army and use them to scare the goblins away.

Hm... what would the minimum z level requirement be?

Silver spiked balls (I think...), or silver warhammers, or even crossbows (since the material doesn't count, only quality).

You can't make silver crossbows in an unmodified game.  It's not an option on the menu.

If you're looking to build up, you gotta have at least 10 above ground. Most valleys I have are part of a mountains region, so there's plenty of Z lvls in both directions for me to have fun with.

Hrm, no you can't build silver crossbows. I honestly thought you could as well, but silver bolts are also effective. You could take a look at [j][m][q][silver] to see all the wonderful things you can do with silver, but my opinion is warhammers, bolts (if you need them), statues, or studding nobles furniture. You can't stud silver statue with silver though :/ But you can stud them with gold and hang rings of goblin bone on them.

A dwarven BFG.
No but really, I don't think you can if you're excluding cotton candy. You could try to make it dodge off a cliff to damage it, but that would mean he has to be near a large enough cliff.

Recruit people and hope they have good weapons.

- fluffy warblers
 - magma
 - murky pool and wait for the night to come (in temperate climates)

or, you can try adamantine stuff.

How do you butcher animals? I have a butcher's shop and animals in a pasture a few z levels up.

Scroll [v] over them, then [p] for their preferences and {s}? to enable them for slaughter. You can also do this through the Z screen under animals.

What should i equip my military with for armor? I can make iron and some steel, I'm currently making pig iron for the steel.

Steel? Steel is best to use, iron helps if it's the only thing you have but it won't guarantee protection against silver or steel weapons. Although legendary shield/weapon users don't really need anything other than a weapon and shield.
My current armor set is: Breastplate, mailshirt, greaves, high boots, gauntlets, helmet, and a leather hood and cloak. Shield should be any so they have the highest quality shield.

When should I expect Goblins? I have 87 dwarves and I would consider myself fairly wealthy. I'm also on year 3-4.
