Tame animals can be slaughtered. They can't be butchered after they die.

Really? I coulda sworn that was just pets.

Anyhoo - here's an actual question:

I've (in iconic dwarven fashion) chiseled into a cliff face to start my fortress. I have since put some constructed walls in the hollowed area. This means that there are constructed walls with soil floors above them. Can I somehow remove the soil floor and reveal the constructed block floor that should be there?

I am unable to dig straight down. I started on the top of a cliff (lets call that z=0), with only one level below me accessable (z=-1), so i desparately need to be able to dig straight down (to z=-2). I looked it up, and apparently I should be able to build stairs underneath (in z=-2) the stairs i already built (in z=-1, going to stairs in z=0). It says that the area directly under the stairs is blocked, and I can't mine there either. What do i do now?

Edit: Oh, and Mac user, so windows-specific fixes wont work. Probably doesnt matter, but thought id say it anyway.

I think you can channel that tile- the miner will rip out the floor but the constructed wall will be intact. The dwarves will be able to walk atop the wall.

First of all:
Are you using a down stair ([d]->[j]) on z=0, and an up stair ([d]->[u]) on z=-1?
Are they lined up correctly?

If you cannot use stairs, you could try channeling ([d]->[h]) instead, which will produce a ramp.

I have been using the right stairs, and theyre lined up. Ill try the ramp. Thanks.

Edit: Channeling worked. Thanks for the help!

I am wondering something. Does the magma sea refill like map-extremity-touching underground lakes ?

Is there a good way to lure a giant jaguar somewhere? I have one on my map that I want but since I don't know how long it will stay on the map I doubt I can build a huge system of walls to guide it in time.

If it's a "stray" then it was tame. Tame coprses can't be butcherd.

That's not true. *Pets* can't be butchered.

Is the refuse pile outside? Make sure the dwarves aren't set to "Ignore outside refuse" on the order screen ("O")

*facepalm*

Yeah, that must have been it, although I didn't know this setting applied in this way...

I hope so. The GCS that vanished 5 years ago never to be seen again doesn't leave me very hopeful though.  :-[

No.  Tame animals of any type can't be butchered if they die from any cause other than being deliberately slaughtered at a butcher's shop.  Pets can't even be slaughtered, unless you kill their owners first, thereby making them not pets anymore.
