Obsidian, I think, is somewhere around silver for swords. (Better than wood, not better than anything else)
I could be wrong.

I thought obsidian was kind of like how glass is treated in the raws- the sharpness is undefined, so it could end up as anything.  I could be way off though.

So... Any idea where the stockpile option for charcoal has gone? It's not in the [bars/blocks] [blocks] option anymore.

Likely to be included in coal, or somewhere very, very different?

Charcoal should be affected by enabling/disabling coal.

Hi again.

Got a dwarf (let's call him Urist) to move a purchased camel from the original cage to the communal cage for clearing.

Later - Urist cancels clean self - unconscious.  Go look at the [r] reports, and see that the clown attacked and started punching the camel while trying to recage it. Then it stomped on him a dozen or so times...

Why? How?  Yet another strange and nonsensical occurrence in my first real 31.19 fort.

I think I'm going back to 31.18 when my computer comes back, until the farming arc is over and I can get iron again...

And my last Q for today...

Just to make sure - in 31.19, if the world map doesn't show any shallow or deep metals, you have NO mineable ore in that embark site?  Ever? Anywhere in the site?

Because I've just worked out that's made about 2/3 of my new world completely useless for DF.  Because real dwarves dig holes, mine metal and kill goblins with steel axes.  They do not farm bees and sell royal honey to elves...

The truth of this will determine if I go back to 31.18 and wait for 31.20 or later...

That's correct.

Also, some of that metal isn't necessarily weapons-grade, so you could end up with cassiterite and galena. (Not sure what's deep and shallow myself.)

I wouldn't call galena useless, it makes nice barrels for selling sunshine to elves, also i like using it in my stonefall traps (platinum is far too valuable)
Sure useless for weapons and armour but seriously how much weapons grade materiel do you really use unless you're burning through missiles/ballista bolts?
You do need alot for armour but no more than a few hundred for a fort.

edit: checked the wiki, the silver ores have a third more density than galena and native platinium is double of that. So yeah basically lead barrels/bins for your elves would be nice.

Nope. It has a maxedge tag in the RAWs.

Hey, if I drop something (like a cow or rock) down a 1X1 shaft onto a dwarf, will it injure them?

You do need alot for armour but no more than a few hundred for a fort.
Let's run some numbers.....
weapon: 2 bars
shield: 2 bars
cap: 1 bar, 2 total
helm: 1 bar
chainmail: 2 bars, 3 total
breast plate: 3 bar
Gauntlets: 1 bar
Greaves: 2 bars
High boots: 1 bar

20 bars per militia

Legendary +5 smiths have 25% chance to produce masterwork pieces.
200 man forts would see at least 120 militias
Total: 20*120/25% = 9600 metal bars

Do you really need masterwork?
you could always recycle the nonmasterwork to get some of that back, but damn i don't think i've even had a single embark that contained 10k hematite.
