The wiki has a nice tutorial on wells. Check it out.  ;)

Well I know how to use wells :). I'm just curious if this is the more conventional way of providing water to a hospital. I didn't know if it were possible to pump water to it, and I'm curious if this is what others do. Thanks though, I'll read more into wells. I think I have 3-4 just for the sake of having that many. I had a great embark, plenty of water around. I just feel bad that my hospital doesn't have an active water supply.

If you have running water and your hospital is below your river, you don't need to use pumps.
Side view:
Code: [Select]
RRRRF#
     #
     #   W
     __D_#
         _
R = river
F = fortification
D = remove pressure with diagonal
# = open space (no floor)
_ = dug out (with floor)

And I get my cage place deleted?
Srsly, I got troglodyte in cage, near my permanent cage, but when I try to move it, dwarf just lets it go, and I gotta put my soldiers to kill it.

I just made a squad full of useless immigrants.

I did not have a drawbridge before these peasants came.

Do the math.

How far can a drawbridge throw an unarmoured dwarf?
Any creature on a drawbridge that retracts will move up to 11 tiles randomly in the X and Y directions.  It does not matter how heavy the creature is, so long as they are not above the weight limit that will prevent the bridge from raising.  They will stay on the same Z level, and the direction they travel is completely random and unrelated to the direction the drawbridge raises.

That explains why the recruits fell into the water, then...

Well, no biggie. A goblin siege showed up with perfect comedic timing.

Why won't my bloody dorfs equip their breastplates? It's part of their uniform, there's enough of them, they're not, as far as I know, forbidden...why?

You didn't tell them to wear leather armor with breastplates? Those two are mutually exclusive (even though I'd expect breastplates to have priority over leather armor, so I don't know if that would even cause your problem).

I've seen some weird shit when it comes to equipping (e.g., when I ordered them to equip two caps and a helmet, some only used one cap, or even no cap; they also seem to have trouble with equipping socks, at times wearing two on one foot and not putting a boot over them, so I gave up on equipping socks altogether), but I've never had problems with breastplates. Still, the above is the only explanation I can think of, as unlikely as it may be.

I only use custom-made uniforms, so I'm not sure about how the default ones work. For all I know, "metal armor" might mean "any metal armor", as in, if you also have mail shirts in stock then they'll equip those and call it a day. Try making a uniform template where you specify breastplates and assign it to them.
