It has eight crappy tables, eight crappy chairs, a couple doors and two or three statues in a 10 by 10 space. It's dug out of soil, for goodness' sake. It's a temporary hole in the ground. And they really think it's legendary?

I'm not sure, but "legendary" is either the same as "royal" or it is something one step above, and "royal" room value only requires a value of 10k. A dwarf's impression of a room, piece of furniture, meal, drink, etc., is also influenced by their preferences. I don't know what the mechanics are, but if your dwarf likes your makeshift dining room's soil type, the material your chairs and tables are made of, or even chairs or tables themselves, that would explain what you're seeing.

He thinks it's a great room. It's based on perception and quality of life.
Watch a king think of that as a "complete shit [profanity with an asterisk is still profanity] room*

So you're saying that someone who is used to little to no luxuries will be more appreciative? I'm not talking about nobles here, just about differences between "commoners" that couldn't be explained by preferences.

Yes, basically.
Also I think status (Outpost, ... , Barony, Mountain Halls) has an effect too.

thanks for the 10k value for royal room tip. I'm making an aboveground military themed fort right now, and I need to make my soldiers happier. now I know when to stop loading them with statues.

Could you check whether one or more dwarves considered your dining room legendary? I'm still wondering whether this can be explained by material and item preferences or by TolyK's hypothesis. Also of interest would be the "objective" value of your dining room: this can be checked in your building menu accessible by pressing R [sic].

at least three think my dining room is legendary. I am pretty sure I havenot fulfilled any of their special preferences. I know the dining room sucks. I have bigger plans aboveground. 18 dwarves at the moment. Grand dining room

That something as Spartan as you have described is "objectively" - before taking into account preferences - classified as grand demonstrates that room values could use being nerfed.

Possibly. Maybe there are things I am missing. Two of the statues are encrusted and are worth about 700. Others aren't and are worth little more than the stones they were etched from. ALl stone items in there are made from chalk.

Some ways to handle this is to reduce the room value if it is a shared room. That way, any nerf doesn't hit noble's dining rooms as hard. Also, take less consideration of room size. And if there are a lot of low value objects, reduce their values in room quality calculation. Spamming lots of picnic tables doesn't make a room look any prettier.

Can someone tell me what "indiv eq" and squad eq do in the following pic?

Way I'm looking at it, a room that's supposed to be royal or legendary should require a value at least ten times higher than it does now. I'm not going to go out of my way to make my life harder by making overlapping rooms, but if I knew how to mod what I said above, I would. This isn't to say that attaining a room value of any amount is going to be difficult, nor that I would want it to be, just that it would be nice for words like "legendary" to mean something in this game.

All of this is, of course, Mickey Mouse bullshit and Toady has too big things on his plate to worry about nerfing or otherwise modifying room value, but I don't want to go off on a tangent here.

I hear there's something you can put into the creature_standard raws to make your dwarves level their weapon skills faster. How?

How does one calculate value for the walls and floor of a room? Are they counted as "Raw stone" like a stone on the ground? And how much does smoothing a wall or floor add to the value of it?

How does one calculate value for the walls and floor of a room? area/amount of floors and walls. Are they counted as "Raw stone" like a stone on the ground? yes, dining room in a vein is better. And how much does smoothing a wall or floor add to the value of it? 2x I believe
in bold.

The elongated dwarven water reactor: is this on the wiki cause i couldnt find it?

W= water, w=Water on the level below  , I or _ = wall   , {=axle ,  M= Gear assembly
S
s= Screw pump   ,
X
X
X =Water wheel

upper level:                 Lower Level:
______                       II WI
IWWWI                       II WI
IWI___I                      II WI
IWI X                         II WI
IWI XM                       II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI XM                       II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IWI XM                       II WI
IWI X{                        II WI
IS I X{                        II WI
Is { XM                       II WI
Iww X                       IWWWI

(sorry for the poor diagram, hope you can understand it, ill put a picture up if you cant.)

Ive got up to twelve water wheels in it as it can theoretically extend forever with only one pump and therefore minimal construction, can be built anywhere if filled with buckets. powered my whole pump stack from the magma sea with it.
Is there a list of designs like this somwhere, id like to see if there are more construction effcient ones for my next fortress.
