My weaponsmith just created a max quality artifact iron battleaxe, which is studded and spiked. Will this be better than a normal steel battle axe? Or is the material property too big a factor?

I think it's the latter, and my dwarves seem to agree: I've got a couple of artifact weapons made out of metals like copper, tin or lead and none of my dwarves prefer those to masterwork steel weapons when set to "individual choice" on the equipment page. And they're qualified (read: legendary in the relevant weapon skills) to use those artifacts as well.

Also, it has yet to be demonstrated that an artifact has a quality level higher than masterwork, which I don't think is the case.

EDIT: If you meant "normal" as in "without a quality modifier", then I do not know.

Can I embark with a dwarf skilled in strand extracting? I've looked through the list and found nothing at all... does it fall under "misc. object user"?
I think you could add [NATURAL_SKILL:EXTRACT_STRAND:number] to the dwarven creature entry, which would give all dwarves some skill at strand extraction. A skill level of 2 (Adequate) might be enough to take the edge off.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Is there any reason why
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
crash my Dwarf Fortress client? I assume it's because I'm already stressing my system with 90 dwarfs and a huge underground cavern, but it just makes me sad. I want to finally fight a worthy opponent.

I though I read somewhere that it's possible to add in a human liaison, but I'm pretty new to modding the game. Can anyone point me to what I need to add to the raws to get one?

No luck so far finding what I need on the wiki/current bugs list/this forum/modding forum, though I'm probably just not looking in the right place.

I've assigned a dwarf to an accessible burrow, 1x1 in size. He has no job, he is doing absolutely nothing. He won't go there. Is there something I'm forgetting to do here?

Give him something to do in the burrow.  Burrows don't force a dwarf to stay in the burrow, they just prevent him from doing anything outside the burrow.  If there's nothing for him to do in the burrow either, he'll just do nothing anywhere.

Can dwarves be murdered?

I had a peasant immigrant who vandalized my mayor's desk, in his room. So, the mayor sentenced him to 51 days in jail, but I have no jail. So, this dwarf was just minding his own business in his room and randomly suffocated.

I check his room and there is blood everywhere. It looked as if he was asleep and strangled to death. I come to find that he WAS strangled by my captain of the guard.

Is this just standard procedure, because he didn't go to jail and needed to be punished? Or was this murder is cold blood? This peasant was a legendary hammerlord and my captain of the guard was nothing, so he knew he couldn't best him in combat, so he murdered him in his sleep.

Am I just over reacting?

Yup, looks like standard dwarven justice : If no prison is available, the sheriff is required to give a beating to criminals. It brings the "Urist Mc Sheriff
was upstet at the lack of jail" thought to a new light, doesn't it?
The "strangle a better fighter in his sleep" is a nice touch, though   :P

I know serrated disc traps will make short work of gobbos and such, but what about skeletal monsters? (Just wondering)

Speakin' of chainsaw traps - will they be even remotely effective if made out of zink? I have a fort with sphalerite and I don't want to waste my iron on making traps...

Zinc isn't an available metal for weaponsmithing, normally, so you can't make trap components out of it..

To get back to your trap component conundrum, I've now had a goblin siege and the armor they wore was rather half-assed. Most of their gear was made of leather or silk, which I think should be easily dealt with even by shitty metals like zinc.

Cage traps leaves me with pain-in-the-ass snatcher prisoners that I can't do shit with but let rot in my animal stockpile.

Anyway, thanks.

Also, does modding ethics require a world regen? So many kobold skulls...

Build a pit, re<c>laim their items, use them as practice for your military.

I tried assigning a gobbo to a pit (on top of a tower...10 z-level drop and it got rid of a LOT of orthoclase, pimp golden tower anyone?). Urist McHauler cancels Assign Animal To Pit: Interrupted by Goblin Master Thief.

Yeah...
