You need a broker with at least "dabbling" in appraisal.

So I guess I misunderstood the guide.

So until a noble shows up I am stuck..  Okay.

You can appoint a broker. He will pick up the appraisal skill, and once he is at least dabbling you'll start seeing the prices. May take a few caravans, I'm not sure - I use the Mayday graphics pack which has a custom embark thingy and the expedition leader usually has appraiser skill.

Although there is no anvil in this starting package. Which confuses the fuck outta me.

Since when do captured humans cause loyalty cascades? I thought all that got taken care of ages back?
i looked it up, as far as i can see goblins will only be freindly to humans in their squads IF they have a human as one of their civ leaders. If however you kill the human civ leader on your map(or if there never was one i the first place.), the goblins will then attack any humans that come on the map with them  as far as i can tell humans will stop coming with them eventually, so there is no bug, i think it may be intended.

My dwarves have been bitching about the crowded tables lately. I don't feel like expanding my dining room area again, so I'm wondering:

Current table/chair setup:

    c
   ctc
    c

If I made it like:

    ccc
    ctc
    ccc

Would dwarves still use the newly added chairs, or can they not sit on them while eating at the dining table?

When a dwarf eats, he wants the entire table to himself, they're possessive like that. Adding additional chairs won't really solve anything.

My leader has teh appraisal skill.  So I'll appoint him and see what happens.  Too much to remember....

Dwarfs want something like this:
Code: [Select]
ct ct ct
ct ct ct
(1 table per chair)

I have a problem on adventurer mode. I am trying to reclaim my fortress from a bronze colossus that has a body count of about 120 right now, he wiped out a full functioning fortress alone because my army was busy dealing with a forgotten beast at the same time, but not before helping me clear out that siege. (The fortress was pretty doomed anyway.)

Unfortunately with an entire goblin siege, five trolls and all my dwarfs lying dead on this map there is a LOT of vermin. So much vermin that the vermin cause it to take more than 20 minutes for my turn to come again after all the vermin are done moving. Is there anything I can do to get rid of all these vermin so I can fight the colossus without it taking 4 days to walk over?

How does one deal with all the Dwarf-owned items stacking up all over the place? I've given these dudes coffers but they're content to just let their personal crap pile up, and it seems tough to get anybody to dump the items. This is getting especially bad with food.

I don't know about food. I've seen a couple of roasts decaying somewhere but it's by no means a common phenomenon. Still, them littering food is probably not that bad, because that will at least decay at some point and get thrown out (or rot to nothing, I forget).

Now, when it comes to clothes, you gotta give them cabinets for those. That is by no means a guarantee that your floors will become clothe-free, as especially military dwarves are going to be lazy about cleaning up (I had once put them on rotation, with only half of my soldiers being on duty at any given time, and they still didn't clean up).

food claiming is usually due to bad military management. Never let miners/woodcutters/hunters into the military, never allow squads to carry food/booze, never interrupt a meal with military orders and never disband a squad when there are still dwarves in it. As for clothing claiming annoyance, mod out all clothes or trick them into getting their clothes atomsmashed.

Can I embark with a dwarf skilled in strand extracting? I've looked through the list and found nothing at all... does it fall under "misc. object user"?

Misc. object user is a military skill, used when bashing the enemy with a shield. Or with a sock, or with vomit.
I never tried embarking with a dwarf with strand extractor skill.
It does make sense however, that it is not available.

Usually, when a mountainhome would get to a point where it is able to produce trained strand extractors, it will have had to extract high amounts of cotton candy.
Usually, when a mountainhome has extracted high amounts of cotton candy, it's populated by clowns, not dwarves.

Explain the high amount of high master strand extractor migrants every forts seem to have?

They are refugees, not immigrants.

But yeah, you got a point there. IMO strand extractor immigrants should not be possible.

Have millstones been nerfed, or is my game running even slower than it used to? Unless my memory fails me, in .28 a dwarf would all but instantly mill something, while taking considerably longer at the quern, while now the difference seems to be negligible.
