I have a small little question. Is it better to have lots of 2x2 bedrooms (unassigned) or one large dormitory?
From a gameplay point of view one gigantic dormitory is the way to go.

The penalty for multiple rooms don't stack, and the little heathens think everything in their room belongs to them, even if it's somebodyelse's bed.

So a 28-dwarf dormitory has at least 28 squares of floorspace, plus 28 beds. Each dwarf thinks a fraction (1/4 IIRC) of that crap is his, so it's like giving each of them a 7-square bedroom with seven beds. Except it only cost you one square and one bed.

From a roleplaying point of view that's silly, and making rooms for dwarves isn't exactly the hardest thing in DF, so I generally give everybody their own room. To make it challenging I insist the rooms be 11*11, smoothed walls, engraved floors, weapon rack, armor stand, rock coffer,  rock cabinet, table and chair.

I'm pretty sure the newborns don't appreciate all the work that went into having their room ready for them the day they're born, but hey.

Why are random items 12k in distance? Why are they in the negatives? I can't build with them, and can only look at them and say "wtf?"

...so I started off with the utterly nooby thread and had downloaded the version they have ready to play already. However, I've decided to start my own now and my normal version of DF is the mini...how do I increase the size of the actual game? (I know in the init file there's the
[WINDOWEDX:1280]
[WINDOWEDY:800]
[FONT:curses_640x300.png]
part but that didn't fix it (already changed it to 1280x800.) I looked in the other init file and it's different version so looks completely different.)
so...help? XD

You can drag the edges of the window to increase the size of it. Be warned, though, game window size murders FPS worse than pathfinding.

how do i get my framerate back up? its currently at 30fps.

is it possible to get back to 100 frames?

also, it keeps pausing
30 fps to 100 would probably need a lot of raw hacking. Describe your fort for any noticable problems maybe?

"Pausing" by slowing down to nothing like that often seems to happen from Ghosts appearing/disappearing.  Or some other ridiculous pathfinding bottleneck.

I have five dead skeletal mountain goats en three dead skeletal hoary marmots in my casualty list, but only one of the goats appears in a kill list, how come? :o I doubt my three war dogs killed all the other skeletons.

Ah. Okay, thanks. I thought collapsed skeletons'd count as kills as well.

The most deadly fish in DF2010 is the Bluefin Tuna, right?

a) it's the print screen key  ;D
b) open up paint (either Windows+R and enter "mspaint", or go to start menu>all programs>accessories>paint) and paste (Ctrl-V) it in. Then save it as a file on your computer.

Thanks.

So my Mac is regular Leopard, can't run DF anymore, yadda yadda yadda. But that's not what I'm here to talk about (only done to explain the situation).

I'm starting a LP on another forum, and I was going to use my PC desktop to start it up so we'd be using .18. However, I have no idea how to a) take screenshots (unless it's the Print Screen key) on a PC or b) find said screenshots.
You should call the help desk of your PC's producer and/or Microsoft. Hopefully they'd send a team to help you with your problem soon. Good luck.

Heh.

I didn't really choose to use a Mac, it was just most convenient at the time (I went to a private school that used a lot of them). It turns out, being on my couch is a lot more comfortable than a computer chair, so I tend to use the Mac when I'm Interneting.
Use Ctrl+printscreen. That will select only the active window for the screenshot (thus, you won't have to crop the images).

Okay, so, now I've found the "raws" folder...and I wanna mod some stuff (replacing all instances of PET:EXOTIC with just PET, or whatever the equivalent is...), so now I have some questions. First off, what's the thing you put in for making a creature tameable, and where do you put it in?

Also, if I remove [CHILD:1] from the cat template, cats will stop having kittens, right?

Do you need to specifically write something in to make an animal war trainable?

makes no difference, except it's be easier for the player to manage.

My question: Can we weaponize exploding booze?

Booze weaponization is pretty much the same as magma orbital bombardment. high up trapdoors with booze on (and tiny amount of. magma to light booze)  might be more accurate than magma bombardment though as wont spread out.

in the future they might give you the choice of what your catapult throws, flaming booze?

100 Z level pumpstack, yay!

Unfortunately, due to three caverns and a fire breathing dung beetle it isn't going to be a straight up and down one. If I run an axle from one pumpstack to another will that transfer power?? Will a grate over the magma at the bottom pump prevent any magma things from being pumped up?

Edit: I've also come aware that I have some dwarven wheat flour stew made from 3 bags of dwarven wheat flour. I wasn't aware it was possible to use the same ingredient in one dish O.o

Editedit: Minotaurs can't get by unlocked hatchcovers? Yes, they can, they would just rather wait until you send someone to remove the hatch so they can jump through it and kill them...
