It keeps pausing? Sounds like you're digging warm/wet stone.

i apologize, i should have been more specific, i mean it keeps pausing in a non game mechanic way, more like... short 5 second freezes every 30 seconds or so

Then you most likely have cloaked ambushers or similar on your map. Once they are revealed, you should have a slight FPS increase (FPS inevitibly decreses over teh life of a fort), and the pausing should stop/

30 fps to 100 would probably need a lot of raw hacking. Describe your fort for any noticable problems maybe?

Once you learn the game a bit, you might try creating pocket worlds with no caverns - Worlds with no underground caverns tend to have much higher potential framerates all other things being equal.

This means surface farming, no dwarf drinks or rope on embarkment, no seeds to start.  Right off you will need a water source and plants you can harvest from the ground.

Dwarven caravans will never bring dwarfy drinks or plants, nor will they bring surface drinks or plants.

THIS.

oh, and about DROPPING PRISONERS...

1z - no harm, just stunning.
2z - potential bruises, head=unconscious
3z - bruises, head=dead
...
7z - quite a few broken bones, internal organs.
...
15z - may explode. many broken bones. many broken internal organs.
...
...
40z - overkill.

i cant play at that speed anymore. ive been playing at about 15fps for around 8 ingame years and ivegot so used to it i cant keep up when i try to start a new fortress. during invasions it would often go down to 6 fps as the rivers of blood covered my map. still easily playable.

peasants keep canceling orders to clean self, that could possibly effect performance i think.

also, none of my fortress dwarfs seem to want to go outside and collect all the wood i have chopped, even tho they have clear paths to there. dunno if that could be a performance issue or not, but i figured i would mention it. they had been collecting it before, but now they wont

i also had my first ever seen goblin siege, that just stood outside my fort and did not attack, i had to go out and attack them! xD

could any of these things hint at a reason for my performance issue? was there something in the map giving dwarfs/creatures path finding issues?

i had 96 dwarfs

If I designate an entire z-level for digging, will my map collapse?

Also, if I make a jeweler's workshop wwwwwaaaaay the fuck away from the other workshops and stockpiles, with a stockpile full of gold, silver, and platinum crafts next to it (and also expensive gems), the jeweller will only encrust those crafts, right?

No and yes, with the exception of the first one, which he'll grab on the way to the workshop.

Do you have burrows? If your dorfs are spamming job cancellation and dont harvest wood, that might be one. Also note that wood harvesting is low on priority list so if all of your dorfs are already busy where else, they might not do it.

If you had about 100 fps at the beginning of your fort, then 30 fps at 96 dorfs is kinda natural. My FPS equation says it should be around 38 fps.

Also, a forgotten beast showed up...and he can't even get to the stairwell into my fortress. Snort giggle heehaw.

Wait, he'll grab what?
When a dwarf decides to do a job, he'll often grab the first item needed for the job on the way to the job site.  This happen when he's on the other side of the fortress, so if you have a workshop surrounded by fine crafts, and your gem setter is on the other side of the fortress surrounded by cheap junk crafts, he may grab one of the cheap junk crafts and take that to be gem-encrusted instead of the fine crafts around the jewelry workshop.  If you really want to control what crafts get encrusted, use burrows or physically wall your gem setter in with them so he can't reach the cheap stuff at all.
