So I wanted to make myself a little repeater. I followed the design at the wiki, but there's this one thing I don't understand.
a) Pressure plates must be constructed on the floor.
b) floors don't allow liquid movement
So how do I construct a pressure plate like it was shown on the wiki? Tried building the pressure plate and then removing the floor, but it didn't work.

Where did you get this preposterous idea?

From my obsidian farm that has 2/7 water flowing on the floors that get channeled out into the magma below.
What I meant was movement BELOW the floor.

I must confess, that I have no idea what you're talking about. I suggest you try the forum thread suggested by the wiki water repeater (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=33563.msg495183#msg495183) as I am unable to grasp the source of your confusion.

Thread necromancy is not my thing.
The problem is:
-I can't build a repeater on the open space
-When I build it on the floor the water never flows downward to the floodgate like it's supposed to and the repeater is stuck.

Ok, first, you realize that that is a top-view, correct?

I'm digging a hole near my fort.  How deep do I have to make it in order to kill things when I drop them in?

The deeper the better. At least 40z.

Huh. That's quite a distance.  Maybe it's better to just drop 'em and wait for them to starve.  How long does it take a goblin or elf to starve?

Never. At this point, only dwarves and other sapient residents of your fort eat. This is scheduled to change soon. Less then 40z might well work, but I've heard mixed reports.

I don't know what to do with it yet. First I wanted to display it at a zoo, but when the cage was shoved inside the animal stockpile, I found out undead creatures create miasma. I can't feed it invaders, since there aren't any goblins nearby. I'm planning to build an aboveground castle on top of my fortress sometime in the future, so maybe I can build a zoo in there. Or maybe I'll build a high tower outside and put it on there. I could kill it, but that seems like a waste. It's not every day you capture a

Any other ideas would be appreciated, though.

Make a pit in your entry area.  Put fun pet in pit.  link cage to lever.  Totally seal walls of pit with constructed walls and tear down all ramps / stairs.  Build a retracting bridge over monster's feeding pit.  When appropriate, open bridge when something you want to play with the critter is on it.

This sounds like a great idea. I don't know if I have space for a pit, though.

I still want to know more about cages, though.

... angry dwarves will deconstruct the cage but not let it out AFAIK. however, building if using b>(cage)>x(to select which cage) and connecting a lever to it will allow it to be opened via the lever.

Does this mean an anrgy dwarf can't free the creature? And what about building destroyers, can they break the cage so that the creature escapes?

Yeah, that's lies. The mantle has been known to be shallower than that in some locations.
From an old !!Science!! thread, sadly defunct, I remember that 4z was the first "will always at least break something" depth.* It's kind of the RNGs territory after that. I don't think I've ever seen anything survive a 10z drop. 40z would probably explode them into all their component parts. Kind of messy, though it does get you more stacks of bones...

*That was in the .40d, so things may have changed, but I don't think as drastic as "40z levels is required".

They may be able to obliterate a constructed cage completely, but I've never seen it. More likely, they will simply turn the constructed cage back into a (possibly damaged) cave item. Containing the whateveritis.

The wiki says, that berserk dwarfs can pull levers, I've never seen it happen, but if one pulls your hydra cage lever it would get out.

If the enemy (or kitten) breaks something, then I can just wait for it to bleed out?
