I now have a water wheel, connected to a gear assembly, connected to a STRAIGHT LINE (n-s) of horizontal axles (three of them).

The axles. Are still. Not being. Powered.

Embark problems!

My dwarves embarked with the wagon on top of a frozen river.  Obviously, I do not want the items to fall into the water when they melt.  In order to move them away quickly, I created an active garbage dump zone and then tagged all the items from the deconstructed wagon as (d)ump.  They won't (d)ump.  They just stand around (d)umbly.  Any ideas what I did wrong?

I made a work-around with an everything stockpile, but I'd like to know what the exact problem was.

It might be that you designated the dump zone on level ground.  You're supposed to have it next to at least a 1z drop so your dwarves can actually dump it.

Not true, dwarves will dump things straight onto the ground.

The default for garbage collection is for dwarves to ignore refuse outside. You need to press o - r - o  to change this default.

Um, is that a new feature, because I've never seen that happen before.

Nope. It's never not been that way. If your dump is on level ground, they'll just pile stuff there. If there's a drop next to it, they'll toss the stuff down.

My game keeps freezing, all of a sudden. Temporarily, though.

I'll get maybe 5 or 6 seconds of "20 FPS", then everything stops for maybe 10-15 seconds, it says Dwarf Fortress is not responding, but if i wait long enough, it always resumes. When it resumes, it says the FPS has dropped to 4 <4> or something low like that, then maybe goes back to <20>, for a few seconds, then freezes, ad infinitum.

I even just recently destroyed all the animals on my fort. I had all of them in two cages and atom smashed. This problem persists even through that.

How do i fix this?

Got ghosts?

Cloaked ambushers will also cause dips in framerate, but the stop-start behaviour is typical of ghosts.

Memorializing or interring the dead will solve this problem, if ghosts are indeed the cause.

That is exactly th behaviour I got the first time I had an infestation of the undead.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.
