the magma sea is about 5-10 z above the lowest z of your map. It's impossible to miss it.

Here's one I've always been confused about: how do people find magma without embarking by a volcano? Do you have to just dig down and get lucky? How does one consistently locate magma?
There's no luck involved at all. There's always magma. You may have to dig several-hundred Z-Levels to get there, but magma is there.

Lately I've been embarking on volcanoes because I got sick of moving ore so far away from the rest of the fortress.

Ah, I knew it was down there. I meant finding it located closer to the surface. My system sux for DF right now and I think a magma pump-stack would make my battered MacBook try to kill me in my sleep.

I figured something out about my stone problem, They dumped all of the stones marked for dumping, that were outside. However, they just aren't dumping the ones inside, there is probably a simple answer to this, can someone please help?

You need at least one piece of refined fuel in order to refine additional coal / lignite. Either your forges snapped up the last available piece, or your haulers are in the process of transporting them to a stockpile.

If you don't make them available for adoption, they won't be adopted.  Pets are marked as not available for adoption by default, so it's not a question of how you keep them from getting adopted.

Dogs which arrive with immigrants are usually already pets, and so can't be trained.  Puppies can't be trained, you need adult dogs for that.  Animals which are in cages or chained up also can't be adopted.

To find magma higher up without a volcano you should look for areas that show an obsidian layer on embark. These often have a magma pool (basically like a volcano but ends in a cavern). I got lucky in my current fort and have one at z-12 (mind i tinkered with world gen parameters so i have lots of regions with high volcanism).

So I defended my fortress with drowning traps (two five-by-five channels with bridges over them, floodgates keeping the water out, all of it linked to a lever, so when gobbos come, they get pit-trapped, then drowned). I constructed a few water wheels, linked of course to machinery, to power the pumps that would get the water out again. The problem is, both water wheels are connected to a gear assembly, both of which are also connected to horizontal axles. The gear assemblies that hold the wheels in place are powered, but the axles are not. I just constructed the axles next to the assemblies, am I doing something wrong?

The axles need to end at gear assemblies, like so:

not like so:

They are on tiles right next to eachother. Some of them are in the tile to the north, some to the west/east. I don't understand why they're not functioning. Spinning. Whatever it is axels do.
