I have a very active soldier, who is very very good at killing, and not dying, or getting more injured than he is, but..

Early on, he got some pretty bad injuries, some red and yellow ones. This does not seem to slow him down one bit, but i still want a doctor to diagnose him and maybe help him. Doctors wont touch him while hes sleeping and he never needs to rest.

How do i get my doctors to diagnose him and stitch him and stuff if hes not bed-ridden?

Is Leather Armor even worth wearing? I'm preparing a squad of axedwarves and marksdwarves to go down and explore some caverns.

Does a pump need to be directly above a body of water or just next to it? Should I construct a short floor over this reservoir I have dug out that I can place a pump on? Please advice.

So I tried my first embark in a partially evil area and everyone was killed pretty quickly by two ogres...

How should I change my strategy for embarking in evil/savage areas?

Should I have all my dwarves trained in weaponry and equipped before embarking? Considering the limited quality/amount of supplies I can take, will this even be enough to deal with the creatures wandering around these areas?

Should I just get everyone and everything inside as quickly as possible and seal off the fort until I train my army?

Thanks!

As I understand it, only the chief medical dwarf does the diagnosing. Assign a chief medical dwarf with the highest diagnosis skill, and then deactivate all his other labours (otherwise he'll get distracted.) Once diagnosed, your other dwarfs will patch him up. I like to keep my medical dwarf with only cleaning and diagnosis labours enabled, so that he'll diagnose everyone quickly and spend the rest of the time cleaning or chilling out improving his social skills.

the pump needs to be a lvl above the water, for instance:

   pP>
w |

Where w=water, pP>= pump pumping in the direction of the arrow |=wall.

Be careful with rivers though, they can confuse some.

For more information and better drawings.

A quick question, I thought I had armor down but now my dwarves are dieing from broken fingers. outside of the full set of steel including plate and mail, do you add leather hood, leather gloves, and socks? Or do the same rules for adventure/arena count for fortres mode?

Can ballista arrows fly through doors? I'm trying to make a corridor that I can protect with bolts, but that traders can get through.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

No. Try it like this (side view):
Code: [Select]

==>#       _____ to entrance
to fort___^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
where _ is floor, & is wall, # is fortification, ^ is upward ramp.

2x1GB sticks is probably cheaper than 2 more 512 sticks.... Old memory is old :P

Just make sure you get DDR2. I'm gonna guess you're on an old enough box that it doesn't have DD3.

Swing and a miss. DDR400!

If I assign a goblin prisoner to a pit, will the hauler dwarf take him out of the cage before he reaches the pit?

Planning on an execution pit, see.

Yes. If I recall correctly, invaders will behave nicely when dragged to the pit, but thieves and such will escape.
