you might try moving a military around to see if you can find where the block is.  station them in different places and see if you can recreate the problem through them.  might be a locked door, a lifted bridge, or I've heard rumors of stairs turning into ramps, though I've never seen it myself.

Not that I know of. Have you been mining, constructing, deconstructing, or working with fluids lately?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Do I need fuel to turn Bituminous Coal to Coal? If so, I'm stuffed.

I lost my axe in a monkey and have found myself in infinite cycle of depression.

Make a wooden training axe at a carpenter's shop. Those can be used to cut wood as well. You could disassemble your wagon to do so...

1 fuel is required to refine bituminous coal into 3 coke, which gives a net gain of 2.

and the way to get a starting 1 fuel is to burn 1 log at a wood furnace.  that'll give you 1 charcoal to fuel future reactions.

Thanks again guys/gals.

I ran out of wood, because I couldn't chop down any trees, because my axe was lost in a monkey, and I couldn't get a new axe because I had no fuel to smelt my ore into bars to make into an axe. It hurt my soul.
Luckily, I got 20 migrants and two of them happened to have axes.

I always keep a set of basic tools (axes, picks, seeds ect.) in a locked vault with a closed drawbridge guarded by war elephants in case of some freak accident where I lose all of that type of item.

Ive got performance issues.

default world settings, 4x4 embark size, 50 dwarfs, dozen pets and a brook.

athlon 2.2ghz, windows xp sp3, 1gb ram and a geforce 8500gt 1GB.

Im struggling to get 15 fps with very little else running.

any tips or pointers to ramp it up a bit without having to dish out 600$ for a hexacore 16gb DDR3 monstrous machine?

thx!

Faster memory might help, but hexacore would be a waste. :P DF is single-thread. ;)

As a techie, I'd definitely recommend a RAM upgrade. If your motherboard supports it, go for another stick of 1G RAM. I've noticed DF taking up almost gig when I play with my 6-year-old fort. DRAM prices are pretty good right now, too. But just a recommendation, not necessary in the slightest. (So no hate mail if it doesn't work, please. :) )

Atomsmashing can work. Smaller embarks, especially 2x2, also helps a bit. You can turn weather and temperature off, that could help, too. Do that in the d_init file in the /data/init folder. Using the d-o to designate high-traffic routes for the dwarves might also help a bit.

Two sticks of 512mb so don't I need two sticks of 1gb to bump to 2gb or can I just buy 1gb stick and cram it in there on the 3rd slot? or buy 2 sticks of 512 and use all 4 slots?

At any rate, plans in the near future for the computer were a simple living room console for NES games on the TV and a music center. Minus well just invest in that damn new tower I was looking at.

Ill definitely try your tips but seeing as my DF rarely eats up more than 500mb of ram, i guess im pretty much screwed for now.

Thanks for the quick help!

I'd have to know more about your rig to give specific advice like that. (PM would be good for that. Off-topic: NES?! Really? :o That's cool!)

But yeah, part of an aging fortress is that it slows down some. I've noticed that having a huge quantity of stone (like, 70k+) has slowed this fortress down quite a bit. I'm gonna dump a lot of it and see how it helps. Not like I'm in dire need of it...

2x1GB sticks is probably cheaper than 2 more 512 sticks.... Old memory is old :P

Just make sure you get DDR2. I'm gonna guess you're on an old enough box that it doesn't have DD3.
