So how come my dwarves only catch vermin when I tell 'em to catch a live land animal?

Also, how do you catch big fish like carp and pike?

Do trader-bought animals come already tame? Can they be safely let out and trained?

Also, in quick world-gen, as in not the advanced parameters way, what would cause a pretty much constant flow of rejected worlds? Is it maybe the fact I've got civs and savagery both set high? Or is it just a buggy thing in general?

Yes

Civs and savagery. turn one of them down.

Because it's mean that way. You need cage traps for larger animals.
Also, how do you catch big fish like carp and pike?
Cage traps.

All in bold above.

...so, I just set up a cage trap somewhere and hope that an animal walks into it, do I.

And how the -hell- do you make a cage trap AT THE BOTTOM OF A RIVER?

Channel/dig out large area next to river, fill with traps, line the closest wall to the river with floodgates, link floodgates to lever, channel out area between floodgates and river.

Whenever your prey is near the floodgates, just drop the gates and watch them path over (and into) your cages. Then raise the gates and pump out the water to claim your prizes.

I like this idea.

So you can you determine if a pump is pumping? When it's linked to a water wheel, that is?

How deep do i actually have to dig to find some magma? I Tried to find Caves/Magma by building a 4x4 Staircase in my Fort that goes down, im at Level 54. Probably its a lot deeper than that but how deep exactly? I Sure hope i took a good place that doesnt just bypass right beside the Caves/Magmaseas. Also will my Dorfs fall trough the ceiling if they dig out a Staircase directly over a free space or Magma sea?

When it's linked to a water wheel, the pump and wheel will change. You can also q over the wheel/pump, green text (Active) means it's working.

Collecting webs

1) Is there rhyme or reason to it? Why does my web collector walk all the way through the caves to pick up one web, ignoring all the webs that are directly at the start of the caves (where he enters)?
2) Is there a way to mark specific webs (similar as how you're able to pick the trees to cut down)

3) Why are some of the webs blinking and others aren't?

If I build a windmill on supports, with a vertical axle under where its center tile would be, and then a horizontal axle next to that which connects to a pump, will power be transmitted to the pump?

sometimes my dwarves, usually soldiers, will drop a piece of clothing like a hat or shoe or something inside the fort and no matter what i do (dump, claim, etc) no one will pick them up. they just lie there the whole game.

advice?
if the item is owned, nobody will interact with it. This is a known problem.

You'll need a gear to connect the two axles.

1: It's crazy like that.
2: You can forbid all of 'em, then unforbid the ones that you're after. I'm pretty sure that'd work.
3: Is there more than one object on that tile?

1) not as far as I can tell, they seem to like webs that are really far away. I control it using burrows.

2) nope, just burrows. Would be nice.

3) probably b/c they've got something else (a ramp maybe) on the tile.
