They do go to him and do "surgery", but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Check his wounds list. It's entirely possible that he needs multiple surgeries.

Check what he needs in the z-health screen. He may need suturing, and you didn't say anything about having thread. He may also need cleaning.

I have thread...no soap, though.

Edit: He needs a lot of surgery, setting, dressing, and immobilization. Wow...just...wow. I think I have all the stuff they need, though.

Edit 2: And another question. Just how long does it take for puppies to grow up? I swear, they should mature in a year...like most normal dogs.

Will hunters only hunt with a crossbow? I turned an immigrant into a hunter and gave him two hunting dogs but we won't hunt anything...

Also... an alligator bit off one of my miners' feet... he's currently in a bed in the hospital... he's not bleeding out or anything... it just says he's lost the ability to stand and my chief medical dwarf won't diagnose him... is this dwarf basically useless now? He apparently isn't dying but he can't/won't do anything...? Can I give him a crutch somehow?

Thanks!

I just had what I suspect is your problem.  The doctor begins surgery on the Urist McBroken, but then another dwarf notices that Urist isn't in his bed so they move him from the surgery table back to his bed.  My log of his health looked like:

Date 1: Brought to rest in Bed
Date 2:
Date 3: Brought to rest in Bed
Date 4:
Date 5: Brought to rest in Bed

The blanks are where the doctor attempted surgery but couldn't b/c his patient was ripped away from him.  They were moving him back and forth between several beds, just like you described.

Anyway, to solve it, I turned off my surgeon's "recovering wounded" labor and then locked him in the hospital with Urist McBroken.  The next time he got the surgery labor, he moved Urist to the table and completed it just fine.

You really could lock any number of dwarves in there with them, as long as they all have "recover wounded" turned off.  Hope this helps!

Are WE Armok?

Also, one of my dwarves, his labors, are pink and purple in text in the labor menu, what does that mean?

I believe that means the dwarf cannot/will not do the labor (I.E, a high ranking noble or activated soldiers).

Thank you.

He is my expedition leader and legendary miner, but he hauls and mines without complaint. He isn't enlisted either. I guess if there isn't a problem, I shouldn't worry about it.

Im trying to find a starting location at the sedimentary layer because my past few games have been metamorphic which was really annoying to play.  Any advice on finding a sedimentary area?  I mainly want hematite for armour.  Ive found plenty of places with Chert which is a Sedimentary rock but i'm not sure if thats enough evidence for it to be sedimentar.

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Places with a layer of any rock that is white colored is a sedimentary layer. The only differences being that each flux stone usually holds different gems/metals.

I have a growing problem in my fort; an increasing number of dwarves are becoming significantly more retarded as time goes on -- they can't find the food stockpile anymore.

I've been getting spammed with "so-and-so cancels eat: Could not find path". This has been going for on a year or so game-time. At first it was just one dwarf mostly who did it. He eventually died of starvation, as he stood amidst my food stockpile. Half a game year later, i realize four or five of my dwarves are now showing similar symptoms. They are all "Starving", some are very drowsy, and all of them are just standing in the middle of my food stockpile, paralyzed, unable to pick up food.

I've tried changing the food stockpile area a couple times, and it seems to not change anything. The vast majority of my 150 dwarves are fine, but an increasing number of dwarves seem to be failing at this. Whats happening and what can i do to fix it?

I have no burrows. I removed them all.

Also - an update on that. All of my starving dwarves just tried to run 25 levels below ground into the underground caves to try and eat the cave lobster that is guarded by some little cave monsters. That is the only food theyve attempted to get.
