Very surprised in my last fort, when a crippled dwarf actually had a cast on and walked around with it...!

Only time I've ever seen one applied, though...

Very surprised in my last fort, when a crippled dwarf actually had a cast on and walked around with it...!

Only time I've ever seen one applied, though...

My hospital recently applied several plaster casts to several different marksdwarves who had fallen victim to the fearsome Elite Goblin Bowman, and I didn't even realize I had any gypsum plaster!  I had intentionally not produced or purchased any 'cause I had heard so much talk about casts being bugged.  Apparently one of the last two caravans that got slaughtered due to arriving at the exact same time as a goblin siege were carrying the stuff and my dwarves collected it from their wreckage.  It never even got stored in the hospital zone since I'd set the amount there to 0.

The dwarves were really torn to bits but my hospital amazingly fixed them up with dozens of sutures and splints and casts and cleaned with soap and everything and all three marksdwarves survived, got out of bed, and are back in full service with only scars to show for it.  My previous attempts at hospitals never really worked all that well but my doctors are doing quite well this time around.

I've also got one swordsdwarf who got his right arm shot clean off but survived after a visit to the hospital and is now one of my best soldiers.  Now that I think about it, I should check to see whether the game was smart enough to disallow him carrying/using both the sword & shield or if he's somehow magically using both in his left hand...

How do I change the profession of a dwarf? Before you embark, you get to pick. I just received my first migrants, how do I change their profession? Do I do it the same way? How? If not, could you please explain how it is done?

You don't change jobs, you change labors. A lot of people use Dwarf Therapist to help with that, but the only way in-game that I know of is v-p-l over the dwarves.

u for the unit menu and c-p-l is a better way of finding specific dwarves to assign labours to.

A giantess just showed up.

I was not prepared for this.

So two questions.

1. Will she leave? She's set off a few stonefall traps, but they only bruised her. And she killed a war dog. All she has is a "fractured middle spine", which doesn't seem to be hampering her any.

2. If the answer to 1 is "no", is there some way I can check where on the map my fortress is located, in game? (So I can reclaim it if...the inevitable happens)

Edit: 3. Building destroyers can destruct constructed walls but not fortifications, right?

4. Would a cage trap stop her?

No

Yes, there is a built-in "reclaim" feature through pressing [ R ] in the embark screen.
Edit: 3. Building destroyers can destruct constructed walls but not fortifications, right?
Building destroyers can't destroy constructions (built through b>C), including all walls and fortifications, and also raised drawdridges.
4. Would a cage trap stop her?
Yes. Unless it has trapavoid, but I think that's not the case.
In bold above.

Well, good, then.

As of now, though, she seems to be chasing a peasant across the entire map. I just hope he'll get too exhausted to go on soon and get killed. So then maybe she'll come back to my fort, and either get killed by the war dogs (oh so very unlikely...) or slaughter my entire fort so I can just reclaim and properly prepare for a giantess.

Like with, you know... walling off the short main entrance corridor with only about seven stonefall traps in it and just making my dorfs use the long, winding, trap-lined one.

She appears to be fighting with a sock.

This'll take a while.

Edit: She is now unconcious. My grossly unarmed military squad is "dealing" with her.

Edit 2: HOLY SHIT SHE'S DEAD. AND SHE ONLY KILLED ONE GUY.

WHAT THE HELL.

How do I get my doctor dorfs to actually fix a guy up? I mean...all they've done so far is move him across the row of beds. From bed to bed, that is. All four of them. There's tables and everything...well, no traction benches yet. The guy has broken limbs, and there's splints and cloth...do I just need to wait for the traction benches to be finished and put up?

Does your doctor have all the medical skills enabled?

Do you have a medical noble assigned, and all other labors off on your medical dwarves? If so, try disabling medical on one of them and see if that helps.
