The only time animals really attack are usually caused by them insisting on migrating through your location, retreating when scared, then attempting again.  Repeat until they end up next a dwarf who is also trying to run away, and then the dwarf gets a hoof in his skull.

Eh, go to the eagles, make the most horrific construction to capture them.  Make a floor 1 wide the length of one full axis, and repeat for each z level.  Fill with cage traps.

Time consuming and Impractical.  The best way.

my dwarves dont throw parties anymore which wouldnt really matter but not a single dwarf in my fortress has decent social skills(and i have over 200 of them). theyre all relatively content and i have the right areas and they used to alot, but not for years now.

1.) Make sure you have a meeting hall designated from a table (typically your grand dining room, whatever). They'll probably throw parties, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll socialize. Statue gardens are also good party spots. Children like to throw parties so if you have a bunch running around and social places, it'll happen.

2.) Create a Zone that's 3x3 and designated it as a meeting area. The dwarves will pack onto it socializing will ensue.

3.) Idle them. No jobs = more time to socialize.

Your fort is in an isolated location. Are you on an island? Or surrounded entirely by mountains? If so, you get nobody except you own civ's caravans and migrants.

Also, punctuation is your friend.

Punctuation is an ass. No I don't believe I am isolated but I could be; how do you check.

Before embarking, press tab twice. It tells you who can get to your site. I don't think there's any way to check after embark, although the civilizations screen can help. If the only civs listed are yours and (possibly) unnamed animalman civs, you probably have no access to anyone else.

My dwarves do not want to carv a fortification. Do I have to have a fortification to have line of site for a caged animal?

Fortifications (and Engravings) can only be carved into smoothed walls. Smooth them first.

This is my first time exceeding 40 dwarves and I have no military, other than my starting woodcutter which I employ to destroy thieves and my 3x20 stonefall trap hallway.

Is it too late? It's my second Spring and I fear for the worst.

Not at all. It's possible to play without a military if you design your fortress right anyway. I'd recommend cage traps, though, because it's possible for creatures to survive stone traps but a cage trap will stop them dead. Some titans might present a problem without a strong military, depending on your setup, but I know from experience that most titans made out of normal things can be stopped by sacrificing about forty dwarves, if you just mob it with them. Bronze colosses I know can be stopped with a cage trap.

So how many pumps do you need to pump water out of a tile faster than it flows in (7/7 water, natch) across, say, four tiles?

Moses effect, bitches. Trying out stupid dwarf tricks for fun and profit.

...Seriously? That's not a lot of pumps. I'll only need to make 8 of them.

*wiki wiki wiki*

...I'll only need one waterwheel. Sweet as -tits-.

...well, and some axles, I guess. Uh, okay, if X is water, P is pump, and A is axle, C is channel, and W is water wheel...

                     P A P A P A P A P A P A P C
                     A                                 C
                     P A                              C
XXXXXXXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXCXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXCXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXWXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXCXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Does that work?

Space under water wheel is also channeled out, of course.

1) Pumps are 2 tiles
2) water wheels need to be connected at the middle, in example:

So all I have to do is make the water wheel horizontal and take into account the size of the pumps. Gotcha.

The rest of it is okay, though? With the axels between the pumps and the water going back into the brook and all that?
