i believe rocks won't pass the wall grate so just build one right before the cistern, or mass dump the rocks n the floor before you channel and then the rocks after you chanel, though i think the second would be faster.

another way is to make a flood gate, let the water push the rocks into a room close the flood gate build cistern in now rockless area and reopen floodgate

...or I could designate all the rocks for dumping.

yeah but that will take a while to complete unless the dump is real close by, but then there will be lots or rocks there, i tend to prefer to let the forces of nature (like water) do the work for my dwarves

Will corpses, or anything for that matter, be permanently preserved if/while encased in stone?

Do work animals gain muscle? Right now I have a war dog that has a gigantic build but is very weak.

I plan to breed my dogs selectively, you see.

...

Don't look at me like that.

Some animals can't be trained into war animals. You can change that by editing the RAWS and putting in the [TRAINABLE] tag. Also, having the Kennels repeat the same task means that they'll probably keep training the same (batch of?) animals. I noticed something similar when I put the Tame creature on repeat; animal trainer was taming the same creature over and over again instead of taming different animals.

If you have dogs and grizzly bears out, and are trying to make war animals, it's most likely that the dogs are being selected first.  You should get the bears trained when all the dogs are either trained or caged.  So cage all the dogs and your trainers should start on the bears.

That only works that way with Taming, where you have to select the creature to tame manually, and putting the job on repeat just results in that animal being tamed over and over.  When you set Training on repeat, your trainer will train each available animal until there aren't any more trainable animals available.  Problem is, you can't control which animal he trains, other than by sticking the ones you don't want trained in cages or putting them on chains.

how do i open a cage? i got a raccoon cage and some cow cages from elven traders, but i cant figure out how to open it!

they seem to be getting fed, but they are all caged and not slaughterable or breeding or anything  :'(

the wiki says to use the Q menu, but whever i try it just brings up options for the stockpile or trade depot or whatever else happens to not be the cage
you need to build the cage with b-j before you can q it. Alternatively, pit the animals then you dont need to build the cage.

i dont understand, they are already in cages, i have to build another cage for them?

How many pumps do you need to use the Moses Effect (see "Stupid Dwarf Trick") across, say, four tiles?

I have a danger room that I'm building. I tried testing it at several points, which means some of the spears are up and some of them are down, and I can't tell. How do I tell?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Not quite. You need to build THEIR cage.

You see, cages are buildings, it's how you make a zoo. It's how you make a jail. It's also the only way to move the creature with the cage. Once the cage is 'built' then you can do stuff to it. It's like how even though a bed is in a stockpile, the dwarves won't use it. It hasn't been 'built' yet.
