The categories are based pretty much on just value. Some nobles also have specific requirements for furniture.

So, to calculate a rooms value, you just add up the value of everything in it, everything the floor tiles are madde of (times their smooth/engraving multiplier), everything the walls are made of (Times their multipliers) and then divide the total by either x or y, where x is the number of rooms that overlap the entire space, or where y is 2^number of rooms overlapping.

Keep in mind partial overlaps only affect the partial bit. So a masterwork statue can be split in half value wise if you place it as below:
#########
#B  S  B#
##D###D##

And then make each bedroom 4x1, including the bed and the statue. Also note that the wall above and below the statue would be split too.

In general, rooms that share at least one piece of furniture with other rooms are only 1/4 of the value that would result without other rooms interfering.
That's about it.
Your calculation would be more appropriate and it is very nice indeed, but it isn't implemented this way, because Toady One has other things to do, like implementing dwarves and fortresses and magma and goblins and sieges and elves and fire and history and insanity and awesome and epic and spoilers and... vegetable oil. Also, as far as I know, shared walls do not trigger splitting.

That's not gonna be easy.

In 40d you could wait until the economy appeared and then look at the cost to rent a room, but you can't find the precise value of a room in-game in DF2010. Your only clue is the quality description

To do this you'd have to create a room of known value with multiple beds in it. Here are the cost levels:
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Room

Make a room of a given value with a certain amount of beds in it, then make a bedroom from each bed. See which category each room fits in. Repeat at different values, with different amount of beds, until you've figured it out.

I suspect MagmaMcFry's contention that a room shared by two is just as valuable as a room shared by 500 is true, I also suspect his belief the penalty is 75% of a room's value is too high. But I'm too lazy to test it.

Will test momentarily.

Hypothesis:
IIRC, two overlapping rooms each have their values halved, three or more have them quartered.

I belive i embarked in a place without sedimentary layer....so how am i going to get gypsum and fuel?

You dig down to the magma sea and build your smelters there. If you have access to sand you might want to build a pump stack. You don't need gypsum as splints do the same thing as casts (without annoying bugs) and can be made from any cheap metal or wood. If you have igneous extrusive layers you can get iron from hematite, if you have marble you can even get steel (make charcoal from wood which can be imported in nigh unlimited amounts). If you have neither, you can go for bronze or straight for spoilerstone.

So, if I mine out a 100+ bedroom complex, set all door as internal, and make really big rooms out of beds, I should get expensive bedrooms, and happy dwarfs. Thanks :)

TEST RESULTS:

Items in room:
10 beds of varying quality
3 aluminum statues (two superior, one well-crafted)

Designations:
One bedroom: Royal
Two bedrooms: Grand x2
Three Bedrooms: Grand x3
Four Bedrooms: Grand x4

And that's where I stopped testing. It seems that room value is quartered for any overlapping at all.

So, if I mine out a 100+ bedroom complex, set all door as internal, and make really big rooms out of beds, I should get expensive bedrooms, and happy dwarfs. Thanks :)
If you dig out a massive room, fill it with beds, add some valuable statues (gold is good), and declare each bed a bedroom, you get hypervaluable rooms for everyone.

My most valuable statue so far is worth 600, and I only bother with them for a statue garden and dining hall. For bedrooms I want more practical furniture, like chests and cabinets. All these random clothes scattered all over the place piss me off. Engraving will raise room value enough for my residents. This definietely goes into my next fort. So much more efficient :) All those 3x3 rooms can be better used as jail cells anyway.

Apart form overall cheesiness I only see one downside of shared bedrooms: noble jelousy.

You only need the pump to be magma-safe if the pump will actually be immersed in magma.  It is possible to build a magma pump in which the pump itself is not immersed in magma.  In that case the pump parts only need to be fire-safe (that is, not made of wood), not magma-safe.  If the pump is going to be immersed in magma, every part of it has to me magma-safe.

You could use nether-cap wood if you only need fire-safe stuff, as it's fixed temperature protects it from fire.
