I'm currently trying extreme home makeover with my dwarves, in stead of each of them getting a 2x3 bedroom with a bed and cabinet, I'm going to have 4 of them share a 3x3 bedroom with 4 beds, 2 cabinets, and a really nice statue in the middle.
Room too small? Too many dwarves? Not enough pretty objects? Dormitory a better idea? (I'm looking at 100+ dwarves)

100+ dwarves... depending on your situation a dormitory might be better. It takes less to set up, but causes a small negative thought. While owning a bed is good.

I dunno. Maybe it will work, but beware that value of overlapping rooms decreases.

How exactly do they decrease? If 4 dwarves share a room, does the current value become 1/4 of the original value? Does sharing a room give them a bad thought, or only sharing a bed?

overlapping stuff gets cut into however many rooms it's shared in

from my experience, at least.

IIRC, two overlapping rooms each have their values halved, three or more have them quartered.

Most animals appear to be gigantic on all the worlds I've generated.
IIRC on one of the talks Toady said Darwinian evolution does take place in DF. But the only trait that really evolves is size, and that always grows. Big animals win more fights, which means they live longer and have more offspring. There is no downside to being big in DF because animals don't need food.

That's a potential explanation for the lack of small, skinny animals. The best way to test it would be to start a fort in year 2, if there are as many small skinny animals as big-ass fatties I'm right. Otherwise I'm wrong.

In all my forts all my nobles have overlapping rooms. Their office, dining room, and bedroom are the same room. They don't seem to mind. Multiple overlaps does not seem to create a penalty, as my Baron always gets his tomb in his room, and the quality of his dining/bed/throne rooms does not decrease.

I haven't tried putting multiple dwarves in the same bedroom in awhile. But in 40d I'd typically dig one big-ass room, assign all my guys to a bed in it, put dining room there, and make offices from spare thrones; and everybody seemed pretty happy. Sometimes I had like 30 guys in a room. The penalty for overlapping rooms was more then made up for by the fact that each of my guys was convinced he owned all 30 beds, the entire dining room, and the furniture my Expedition Leader insisted on having in his room.

So I can assure you that if your statue is good, the walls are smooth, the floor's engraved, you'll be fine.

Four masterwork platinum statues and you can have any number of royal rooms.

I just recently read Boatmurdered  :D It had a really good Idea for a noble bedroom: Make a really big room, put there a bunch of beds, tables, chairs, cabinets, chests, armor racks, weapon stands, and any furniture artiffacts you have, make some overlapping bedrooms, throne rooms, and dining rooms out of that, and assign all that to your nobles. I think, I'll try that at some point.

Other than that, I'd like a formula to calculate value of a room. What is a fine dining foom anyway?

The categories are based pretty much on just value. Some nobles also have specific requirements for furniture.

So, to calculate a rooms value, you just add up the value of everything in it, everything the floor tiles are madde of (times their smooth/engraving multiplier), everything the walls are made of (Times their multipliers) and then divide the total by either x or y, where x is the number of rooms that overlap the entire space, or where y is 2^number of rooms overlapping.

Keep in mind partial overlaps only affect the partial bit. So a masterwork statue can be split in half value wise if you place it as below:
#########
#B  S  B#
##D###D##

And then make each bedroom 4x1, including the bed and the statue. Also note that the wall above and below the statue would be split too.

Are you sure?
