Thank you. The little buggers won't die of starvation when active will they?  They aren't very smart.

Alligators wander randomly just like regular animals. Just put trap anywhere especially at choke points. However they consider themselves cornered if you are next to the bank and they are under and will attack furiously. IDK why but that's how it work.

Thanks a bunch.

There is a file somewher in your DF directories called Init.txt. The option is in there.

if i channel some tiles and fill lets say half of them with water 4/7 and the other half 5/7 does this count as flow i can use in water wheels? this workerd acidentally when a tree grew and blocked an area of water off but the water wheels above it kept going and the water keeps moving between the tiles.
if i channel some and ond them, will it work?

i tried it with 4 channelled tiles and it didnt so i was thinking maybe i need more?

You could just put a pump on one side, pump to the other side, and use the water wheel to power the pump.

congrats, and welcome to perpetual motion!

Somewhat related: Light grey is minor injury, dark grey is gone. In this case you can work it out from context, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference visually. I changed things round in the init file so that bruised is dark grey and gone is black on a grey background.

Another question -- can I put babies in the military, and if so, can they wear the same armour as adults? I don't want to draft them, just make them less squishy.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

You use monochrome CRT still? There's no light grey, minor injuries (bruises) are brown. The color used are white -> brown -> yellow -> red -> gray and sometimes cyan inbetween.
And you cant directly interact with infants so you have to make do with their moms.

Ammunition.

This is the bane of my existence in this game. I can't make heads or tails of how to get my dwarves to equip real bolts for battle. It seems entirely hit and miss. I have plenty of metal bolt ammunition sitting in a safe stockpile, but all they ever use is wooden bolts, and when im out of those, they just sit around or run around with their thumbs up their ass.

Right now, under M -f - squad - metal bolts (100) C T. This squad is currently active. I'm looking at my captain of the guard holding a crossbow, and equipped with an empty quiver, stationed in a tower i built, not moving. He has full access to the ammo stockpile.

Similar story with my other 2 marksdwarves. One has a crossbow and empty quiver, another has a crossbow and no quiver. No one seems to be in a hurry to get more ammo to fire at the elves outside our walls. What can i try?

ugh and just as i post this, sure enough, they all grab the right bolts. I still dont know what i did, if anything.

I'm trying to construct an irrigation system and my dwarf always wants to build on the north side of the flood gate which will end up in it getting stuck is there a way to stop this?

I have been annoyed by this far too many times, and now have a "always do this" solution for any construction that might get a dwarf stuck.  Create a pathway to get into the enclosure that has a door.  When you are ready to seal the enclosure, forbid the door and build the last wall right next to the door - the presence of the forbidden door requires that the dwarf stand on the proper side of the wall during construction.  For floodgates in tight areas, there's a slower but just as effective solution (provided that there's another way out before you fill with water/lava)  build a stone wall, then turn it into fortification.  This has the added benefit of preventing critters from getting in.

Basically, force your dwarves to stand where you want them to stand during construction.  There are lots of ways to manage this, some more dangerous than others.  If you don't force them to, they will nearly always choose the wrong side of the construction to stand on.  It's just how dwarves work.
