Hey all, I just had the brilliant idea of using ice to build some things and then having them melt, of course, so I could have some water for my wells-to-be. As my brother rightfully pointed out, though, it would then be stagnant water. Does pumping water around make it non-stagnant for game-purposes? I have *never* used a pump before, so I thought I'd ask. :)

1.) Ice won't melt when it is used in constructions.

2.) It seems that the water from ice is unusable for mud, and will not stack, thus making it undrinkable.

So the entire plan is a bit bogus? Damn. :(  Hmm. Then I guess I'll have to be ingenious with the few surface puddles I have. Thanks for the answer.

Hmm, my dwarves have just gotten some FB's version of body rot. The worst part of it - it's spread like wildfire across the fortress, though it was only their feet that got rotten (unlike the 3 dwarves that have their entire bodies along with internal organs and eyes rotten away)
My question is - will these rotten body parts have a significant effect on my fortress as a whole or are they just gonna stay as yellow wounds? (which don't really do anything)
Another question. Can building destroyers destroy hatches?

So I often see on these forums screenshots of descriptions of night creatures or other beings where it says "blah blah blah is a green troll with two eyes and wings" or "blah blah blah was a vampire who was certainly of noble origin". I just killed a night creature myself and want to view a description of it but don't know how; could anyone tell me how to do this?

Start DF -> Start Playing -> Legends (Mode) -> Historical Figures -> (f)ilter -> {creature name here} -> ENTER.

Regarding tame cardinals, I got some cardinals in a cage I bought from the elves and I'm trying to release them to fly about. Is that possible?

The game keeps saying I need animal trap.

Vermin animals cannot be released normally without an animal trap to hold them.

Does anyone use this or any other custom workshop mod? I can't figure out how to build the custom 'tinkers' shop, I've looked everywhere in the build menu. Is some special way to build a custom workshop in the game?

I looked into that mod to check for you and from how I see it the guy FORGOT TO INCLUDE THE TINKER WORKSHOP IN THE MOD. If he did include it, it'd show up in the workshop menu at the bottom, under or above the soap workshop.
If you want to use them without waiting for him, open up his reactions and change all BUILDING:TINKER to BUILDING:SMELTER

Thanks for all the answers. Now all I have to do is figure out a way to not have my pump deconstruct when my FB sleeping on it decides his pillow got too rough. What I was looking for was a way to protect the bottommost pump. If that one is fully walled off then it's got nowhere to draw water from and flying FB's can just fly through the intake (like my current one did).

Hrm, you can draw water through floor grates with a pump.  Here's how I set up my secure water sources.

........_PUMP ->
#wwww

_ = Floor Grate

# = Fortification

w = water that comes through fortification

Question again:/
Is it actually possible to get flux on a volcano zone?

I know this is a response to an old question but...

I did actually once get limestone right next to a volcano. Unfortunately the map (yes 4x4!) was unplayable due to some wierd cave thing that had somehow appeared over the ground for some twenty levels, it was some impossible natural construction. Map would load, but when you unpaused the game would crash.

Was a crying shame. Now I keep trying to replicate a playable, similar version, but so far having no such luck.

It is entirely possible to get a good flux stone (like limestone) on the same map as a volcano, especially if you extend the map size. Maps don't have to be square, after all; a 2x8 map might cross more biomes (which is good for this purpose) and is exactly as playable as a 4x4 map.

Even so, you'll probably have to design a custom world with worldgen. I wouldn't call it modding, it really just requires adding more volcanoes to the world to up your chances of finding a volcano next to flux. There are never enough volcanoes in the game under normal cirmcumstances.

You could build the cage, build a lever, link the lever to the cage, and then pull the lever.  That will release the tame cardinals.  Dwarves hate to have tame vermin flying around loose, so they'll constantly try to catch the cardinals and put them in an animal trap.  Since you apparently don't have any animal traps, this will generate constant job canceled message spam.  If you build some animal traps, your dwarves will attempt to catch the cardinals, but will be unable to do so because cardinals can fly.  This will again generate constant job canceled spam.  Eventually, any cats you have around will kill the cardinals.

In other words, you can release them to fly about, but you really don't want to.

I have military with options
- sleep in baracks at will
- sleep in baracks at need
- sleep in room at will

Is there any difference? I wanted to have military sleeping in thaeir own rooms, but that somehow failed.
