Because a dwarf is not supposed to carry both an axe and a pick at the same time.

I have a small but growing fortress, currently with a full squad of military. However they seem to be part time military, and I would like to get them to upgrade to only soldiers. Right now after they are done fighting they go back to being dyers, tanners, ect. How can I make them full time?

Thanks!

owned items shouldn't be eligible for dumping... and it takes quite some time for clothing to degrade away :/
They'll wear armour over their clothing, won't they?

Probably been asked a million times, but...

How do I make a reliable magma pump stack? I'm no good at mechanics, and the only one I ever made overflowed and burnt ALL the axles (not one, not two, all of them).

Also, is there a way to easily turn it on/off? Because, that's kind of what killed my other one. I want it to pump magma up from the earth, into the air and then subsequently into a resevoir to be used for a magma-cannon. But, you know, I kinda want the magma cannon to fire on command, not constantly, and the resevoir is going to fill up and etc. etc.

PLEASE HELP

Build yourself a small water-pumping stack first, and make sure it doesn't draw from sourced water. Limited quantities of water are much safer to work with.

To stop a stack, have a floodgate next to the topmost pump. The stack itself can be left to run constantly.

A couple of questions.
1. About the safety of pump-stacks. Does the entire stack degrade to materials (deconstruct) when the bottom one is destroyed by a building destroyer?
-if yes. Can flying building destroyers (like Forgotten Beasts) fly through the power channels into the main fort?
-if no. Can flying building destroyers destroy buildings vertically (above or below them)?
2. Can a captured Giant Cave Spider die of old age? If yes, what's their average life span?
3. Will making magma and water collide on the same level turn the entire thing into obsidian, or just make a sort of obsidian wall in the middle with magma and water on the sides.
4. Is there a way to make the dwarf put on a certain item without dragging him into the military or make sure he keeps it after he's drafted out?
5. Is there a way to for the dwarves to start a fire without relying on fire-breathing monsters?
6. I've reduced the goblin leaders to just law-giver. Will he ever appear with the troops and if he dies what will become of the goblin?
7. This one I'm almost sure is no, but what the heck. Is there a way to get adamantine from a source other than the veins?

1. Yes
-No
2. Yes, they have a [MAXAGE:20:30] which means they can die at 20 years old, and absolutely will die at age 30. They can die anywhere between also.
3. It will form a wall.
4. Not that I know of.
5. I've heard there's a way to do it with magma, but it's probably very Fun.
6. I don't think Law-givers attack with an army. If the Law-giver dies nothing would happen if I'm right.
7. Nope. Without modding a reaction that turns something in to adamantine, of course.

At least the fortress is safe. I still don't understand why they can't flow through the channels. And is there a way to ensure your pump stacks don't get destroyed or at the very least just the one at the bottom?

Also, I got the idea of dropping the water into the magma via a large area composed of floor hatches, so my question:
-will it work?
-do the hatches (or the mechanisms) need to be magma safe? (they're supposed to drop water into the magma, not otherwise)

They (if you mean creatures) can't move through it because the power channels have the impassable tile of the pump over it, essentially making floor. The best way to keep out creatures is to wall off the pumps.

1. It should work.
2. I think both need to be magma safe, because with magma over the hatches they might melt if not magma safe and if they are activated the mechanism would melt.

1. If I understood your answer to my first question then the entire stack deconstructs after the bottom one is down so there's no real floor above , just a bunch of open-space channels. Not to mention the pumping channels.
2. Wouldn't walling the pump stack kill the idea of building one in the first place? (cavern lake)
3. The design was the exact opposite with water being above the hatches and magma below them, so the magma doesn't directly touch any of the hatches (unless 7/7 deep water/magma is essentially the same as a wall)

1.But there is a floor for creatures, so they can't fly up it.
2. The idea of a pump stack is to pump water, walling it off just stops building destroyers from getting it. It would only kill the purpose if you used all dwarf power to operate the pumps.
3. Then it won't need to be made of magma-proof materials then.

Thanks for all the answers. Now all I have to do is figure out a way to not have my pump deconstruct when my FB sleeping on it decides his pillow got too rough. What I was looking for was a way to protect the bottommost pump. If that one is fully walled off then it's got nowhere to draw water from and flying FB's can just fly through the intake (like my current one did).

Wall off the surface of the water too, except where you pump from. This still leaves an opening for swimmers, but that's just the price you pay.
