Concerning the maximum height of a map, is it possible for flying creatures (not including vermin) to go "above" this ceiling and bypass things like fortifications or wall grates?

yes, because the top z cannot be constructed on, but can be moved on.

It's possible your volcano is draining down into a cavern or even the magma sea.
unless some cavern collapsed for very very wierd reasons or some amazing glitches occurred, that's quite unlikely. Volcanoes are vertically straight magma tubes with guaranteed obsidian walls. It wont ever collapse on its own.

I always get a notification that some cavern has collapsed immediately upon embarking on a volcano, however these have never resulted in the volcano draining.
That's the whole point.

yes, because the top z cannot be constructed on, but can be moved on.

Just to clarify, do you mean that there's a level I can't get to above the highest one I can move to? Because as far as I can tell I have no trouble building fortifications on the highest z-level I can see. Sorry if I'm being dense or something.

EDIT: Derp, don't delete closing tags.

I do mean you cannot build on the highest level which you can zoom to. In example if your z cap at +5 then you can only construct things on +4 top. It'd read "cannot build at highest level" should you try.

What's the difference between "Move view/cursor up (z)" and "Move view/cursor up (z), aux" in keybinding menu?

You can't build walls on the highest Z-level, but you can build fortifications or wall grates or statues or other things that block movement there.  Flying creatures can't fly over the highest Z-level, so you can build a wall that nothing can fly over this way.

(I have a genned world with 30 zlevels above sea ground level. I made a giant tower out of it and went smoothly. Even had a magma fountain on top!

DO fortifications and statues actuallu block flyers? I was under the impression that at least the former did not.

No, remarriage isn't defined in the raws at all.  The issue with remarriage is that Dwarf Fortress is not at the moment capable of remembering more than one spouse for any civilized creature.  Spouses do not lose their spouse status when they die, so a dwarf (or any other civilized creature) who marries can never remarry.

Immigrant dwarves sometimes show up with children but no spouses.  In theory, there should be no reason he can't marry, since he has no spouse recorded.  I don't know if this actually works in practice.  You should lock him in a small room with multiple single female dwarves and no jobs to do and tell us what happens.

Designate [d], Set building/item properties [  b], and then Reclaim Items/Buildings [c], which will be selected by default.
And then define a rectangle by pressing Enter at one corner and then Enter again once you've moved to the other.

My embark seems to have no molten rock wall between the underworld, and the magma seas in certain places, meaning all the magma is being drained into hell. Curiously enough however no HFS has spawned. Perhaps they are only triggered when an adamantine shaft is breached.
