Ahhh, much obliged. :)

Edit; ahh, doesn't seem to work. I have somethingsomething .18, I bet it's deactivated in this version.

Edit; just saw one of my hammerdwarves wearing cloth around his or her lower body. Never knew you could use plain cloth as clothes in game.

It works in 31.18 - I made one for a dwarf that took a wrong turn running from where he fortified a wall holding back lava.

First go to mason workshop and Alt-s to make the slab

Then after the slab has been sent to furniture stockpile, go to craftdwarf workshop and do Alt-s, choose the stone you want to use, and then when you select the stone, you will get an option on who to dedicate it to.

THEN when the stone is moved back to your furniture stockpile again, you have to place the stone using Alt-s yet again.

Alt + s genuinely does nothing. I tried it in the order menu via a and then alt+ s and tried it without the a menu, nothing happens. I expected it to show up in the creation queue.

What menu are you accessing with "a" ?  a = announcements, and you can't create anything from there that I'm aware of.

You are using 0.31.18 correct?

when did you last order something directly from a workshop?

edit: there you go, ordered at a masons workshop... http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1061/slab.png

Ack, lol, the keypresses are so automated for me now, I didn't even think about it.  I thought he was referring to some third party software or a change in keybinds.

My bad.

Frisian, 31.18 does support making slabs though, what happens when you try to make one?  Do you have nonmetal, non economic stone available?

I meant the q, move cursor close to mason shop, press 'a' to add new task and then it's simply not mentioned in the list. I've never seen it mentioned in the list either. Alt + s does nothing. :P And yeah, I should hope I have enough stone. Stock mentions 2743 unused stone (and 2504 used, with the red letters) A good majority of that is non-economic, it seems.

And I tend to always order directly from the workshop, I don't use the manager often unless I really need bulk. :-/

That's really strange.  Can you verify you are using 0.31.18?  It's on the startup page center, near the top.

If you are using 0.31.18, was this fortress started with an older version of DF?

Can dwarves walk on screw pumps or is it considered impassable terrain?

There are two tiles on a pump. The input end is passable, the output end is not.

My dwarves keep grumbling about long patrol duty. What I can do with it (=how can I give them free time, and how much)?

By default the training alert schedule keeps the squad training at the barracks all the time. Until the soldiers earn champion status that will result in unhappy thoughts. Go to the schedule for the squad via (m) -> (s) and delete (x) the training order from the squad for a few months (giving them time off for 4 months is usually enough). It is better to make their holidays multiple months long because they will get unhappy thoughts from changing to a militia dwarf from being a civilian too (which can get you unhappy dwarfs quickly with a schedule like train - no order - train - no order - etc).
The dwarfs will do individual combat drills in their free time too which increases their weapon skill, so if you start with completely green guys it is actually advisable to not have them on active/train all the time.
Make sure the schedule reads sleep in room at will (the default) and make good rooms for them (good quality bed, door, etc). Another trick is to make multiple paved roads (out of materials they like if you have easy access) on the way to the barracks so whenever they leave/enter the barracks they will get a happy thought.

Whenever you give the soldiers active orders, make sure you cancel them once the threat is dealt with.
If you need longer protection for stuff like woodcutting or outdoor constructions, consider using multiple squads.

How much of an effect on your fps does generating a world with a huge number of megabeasts/semimega beasts have?

Hi guys I got another question. Is there a way to prevent items from being scattered around after abandoning a fortress?

Could I make a large stockpile and then lock said items inside with a door or maybe a wall?
