You have to appoint a captain for the new squad.

How is that done? I can't see any option for assigning a new captain to a squad I don't yet have.

Or just make a new squad in the military screen, and whichever dwarf ends up being picked first is captn of that squad, and automagically assigned the noble position.

Watch it though, as this got me a captain of the guard as well, which required some minor noble rooms.

Two questions about cages:
- can the caged animals mature (puppy->dog, etc.)?
- how do you safely butcher caged animal (like Rutherer)? It's getting cramped with all the cages and I wouldn't like a repeat of Boatmurdered in my fortress.

You either picked a bad spot (no access) or have a bad worldgen with everything dead.

really? The world starts at 50, so I am only 3 years in. Should they start showing in year 1?

I misunderstood you. I thought you meant year 53 of the fortress (ending worldgen at year 50 is really uncommon.) Even so, Civ Forge usually starts quicker.

Yes.
You can go to the stocks screen (z), then the Animal sub-section and designate which animals to butcher from there.

I'm asking if you can safely butcher non-tame animals. They don't show up in the list and taming them just to butcher them later seems unproductive.

You can't butcher non-tame animals. Tame 'em or execute 'em.

Use speardwarves or spikes; they produce fewer items to be butchered.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Some of them can be created at world generation and by chance get placed in your embark site. I've had a not so funny (or very FUNny) case where
a Forgotten Beast was already in my dungneon as soon as I dug down to it.
Also an extension of my earlier question: can you kill animals still in cages? And can you specify which cage and where you would like to move?
(the 'build cage' only lists empty cages)

Edit: Another question just occured to me. Can adamantine clothing wear off like normal clothing?

You cannot assign a non-tame animal to be slaughtered.  You can butcher the corpse of a non-tame animal, but you need to kill it by some other means, typically by building the cage, linking it to a lever, and then pulling the lever while the cage is surrounded by soldiers, war dogs, weapon traps, or in a drowning chamber.

Press 'x' when looking at the 'build cage' list, and it will list each cage individually, indicating what creature is inside each cage.
You can't kill creatures in cages.  Cages are like pocket universes, nothing that happens outside the cage will harm the creature inside.  The only thing that can kill a prisoner or captured animal in a cage is death by old age.  You need to arrange to release the creature, then kill it somehow.

Yes.  It wears just as fast as normal cloth.  This is annoying and stupid.
