You could also build a staircase inside and then make the roof around that if you want your marksdwarfs to also use it as a vantage point when you're actually being threatened.

You can build a staircase on a staircase up to the sky and attach floors to those. Then attach walls/fortifications to those floors and so on.

An actual Lake (biome) can be more than 1z deep, a Murky Pool (glorified puddle) will not be.

I believe you can construct a wall and then fortify it. That will give you a floor above the fortification.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

If you want to build a staircase in what is currently open air, you use the constructions, not designations (b-C instead of d)

Just started on a new embark and began digging into the dirt. I decided to use ramps for a change.

So I go to dig a downward ramp, but can't see the option in designations. I figure that a channel does pretty much the same thing, so designate 3 of those for the last tile row (nothing dug at this point).

My miners dig their way down through two of the channels, then won't come up. Or dig the third. There isn't a ramp at the bottom!

Why not? Or what have I stupidly forgotten?

The only reason for there to not be a ramp, that I know of, is that the level below was already dug out.
I don't think this is what happened, so I don't know.

To get them back up, designate a stairway or uild->[C]onstruction->[r]amp.

That's just it though, this is from a virgin embark. The soil was completely untouched.

And I couldnt build anything as I hadn't hit stone yet >.<.

Spose I could have used wood...

I bailed, will try again later.

So it IS channeling to make a ramp on the next layer down? And it works in soil?

Just a question, are you using 40d in stead of 31.xx?
Because I think 40d's channeling worked differently.

Are you using [ b ]uild->[C]onstructions->[buildables] instead of [d]esignations->[stuff]?
If so, are any job suspended/job canceled alerts showing up?

It wont let you build things that your dwarves can reach. Floors can float, as long as a single tile connects the floating floor to a place your dwarves can get to.

As with building stairs, I just loaded up DF and built one outside fine. You are (B)uilding a stair, correct? Use B-C-U to get an up stair. They cannot be placed on a floor, either, so if you are making multi-leveled houses, be sure to leave a square open for a stair.

Edit:

Looks like I pageraped this fellow. Here is his post:
