I just re-read the wiki entry on caverns, and I am now even more confused about the cavern I found, apparently it is NOT the 3rd level cavern although it spans from z level 90 all the way to -4. Reasons why it's not the 3rd cavern (or #2):

1. The magma sea is not right under it because the bottom rock isn't warm.
2. The vegetation that occurs in layers 2 and 3 does not occur in this cavern.
3. The monsters in it are not very dangerous (only ones spotted/remnants of: Draltha, cave spider, and giant cave spider).

The cavern is also odd in that it does not have any water. Can somebody check out my save (posted on page 451, top of page) and tell me what you think? The cavern starts on the far left of the area at z level 90. I think this is one WEIRD cavern...

well it looks odd... anyways it's 5 in the morning here. I'll check back later.

my advice currently? wall it off (for now) and build your whole fort there, not removing any pillars. But mining through is OK as long as they look right from the outside.

And another question!!
I have 2 injured dwarves at the hospital, with completely tended to yellow injuries. They have been unconscious for about 3 months now, while one of their comrades with a cut of hand is now up and running for a month.
Do they refuse to heal? How am I supposed to pull them out of their bed?

look at their medical status. in the z>health, look for folks with "ability to stand lost". those are gonners.

Just got the queen on my latest embark. Sadly she only stands at the map edge tagged as friendly. The consort with the legendary soldiers made way to the fort fine. Anyone have an idea what could be causing this? She's the same queen as from my last fort as it's the same civilization and i abandoned with everything intact. Any suggestions what i could do to make her move? :>
Also i accidentally carved a fortification in a candy tube and spawned some clowns. If i abandon this fort will it be overrun by clowns when i come back in adventure mode?

To the cavern guy: Caverns can be connected either by passages or just by overlapping, when this happens you usually get the vegetation from the corresponding cavern levels depending on z-levels. Not all caverns have all types of trees but if there's only fungiwood and tower-caps you are in the first cavern.

Healthcare woes -

I've currently got a dwarf that's pretty well banged up, requiring both Surgery and Traction, and the medical dwarves seem to be playing 'pass-the-dorf' around without actually operating on him. So far he's been on every bed and every table in the hospital, and they'll occasionally try to move him to a traction bench, but cancel because he isn't resting.

All beds have adjacent tables, and two of those beds also have adjacent traction benches.

Occasionally, they'll drag him out of bed and just leave him on the floor, too. His medical history has three pages of 'Brought Patient to Bed' ...

WTF's going on here?

well i made an arena of creatures in cages. now i released a few monsters via lever and was wondering do the mechanics come off the cage alone or is their a way to take off the mechanisms to use them on other cages.

Magentawolf: Try disabling the Retreive Wounded job on most of your dwarves.
You could also try deconstructing the beds that do not have traction benches directly next to them.

moisesjns: When a cage is deconstructed via lever it leaves behind one of the two mechanisms used to link it to the lever, while the other mechanism stays attached to the lever.
This is actually a rather efficient way to value-up a nobles room, as an unlimited number of semi-valuable mechanisms can be crammed into a single lever.
If you want all the mechanisms back, deconstruct the lever.

Also, first post of 2011! Yeah!

Better disable it on all dwarfs, or lock the surgeon in the hospital alone with the patient.

Huh. Didn't know that last bit. Will have to pull apart my goblin releasing lever.

Also, not the first post. 3hours begin on what the forum tells me the time is, and it's 9pm on the first here in east coast Australia :P

Also I'm 25 today, so HUZZAH!

I chained a Gorlak, caught with a cage trap, on top of a short towr, but somehow most my stray animals are now attacking the Gorlak while the animals usually never even go there. It's gotten a dog bite in it's foot and a donkey foal's kick against the head (luckily my tame grizzly has yet to appear!) but I just want the Gorlak to be left alone there as a sort of look-out post. I don't have enough chains or cages for all those strays I think, though maybe I ought to give that a try.  :-\  Is there another way to keep them from attacking the Gorlak? It seems they ignored the not-pet-passable floor Hatch. Or maybe the Gorlak did that. Stupid annoying animals should leave my Gorlak alone. :(

Hmm. Now my Grizzly is approaching the tower, for no reason. And I just assigned a whole bunch of animals to a single cage. And the Gorlak wounded a dog by biting it's front leg and shaking. :p

NVM; A Fisherdwarf seems to have caged, and saved, the Gorlak.

you do know that 1 cage can hold infinite space, right? just assign all your stray animals to it.

but evidently it's caused harm to your civ and is now considered an enemy, though trained. I suggest keeping it far away.

Yeah, I realized that later. DOesn't really matter anymore, because my computer crashed so none of that happened. :o

I'm not sure. First thing I noticed was that it was trudging around in my caverns, second thing was that it was in a cage trap. Also; it's not trained. So that might simply be the case. Next time I'll make sure no pets can get there at all by using locked doors and hatches.

NEW question; I recruited someone to attack a Kobold thief who had appeared hastily into my militia group and as he charged he committed a bit of a critical fumble. He missed and the Kobold slashed his foot. Now he can't move to the hospital on his own, and he's hungry but it does not seem anyone's endeavouring to fetch the poor fellow. Do they actually move wounded people around that way if needed?

Never mind all that, I ought to wait a bit more. My cmd has gone to pick him up, but his ability to stand is lost so, and I just read this, he's probably a goner. :(
