Awesome, because I plan on having at least one crossbow squad across from it, a ballista at the end, and multiple weapons traps to encourage dodging.

And even if anything gets across, all I would have to do would be lock a floor hatch. Speaking of which, do locked ones only block movement from below, or do they block anything that wants to go a z down too? iIe, hatch is on staircase at floor 0, gobbo on floor 1 staircase wants to go down to floor 0, can it do it if the hatch is locked?

hatches block movement in 2 directions. like doors.
but can't be destroyed by building destroyers from below  ;)

so make it like a "hanging entrance" going up and then down into the fort proper.

I actually had a 3-z-level-tall automated goblin grinder (really easy to make!) with a flooder at the bottom... all thieves and most ambushes killed themselves  :D

plus I had ballistae

Hello all,

Is there a way to remove a ramp from above?
I'm trying to make a pit for hostile creatures, but my miner gets stuck if I deconstruct the ramp, and I don't want to build stairs.

What you need to do is [ b ]uild containers (coffers or bags) in the hospital zone, then wait until a bar of soap is taken there, then forbid the rest of the soap.

The clean self canceled message is caused when you have soap bars which are not stored in a hospital.  Dwarves do not know how to use soap which is not stored in a chest in a hospital zone.  Putting a soap bar stockpile in a hospital zone will not work, you need to build multiple chests in a hospital zone for your dwarves to store soap (and thread and crutches and splints and bandages) in.

Once soap is stored in your hospital, your doctor will use it to clean wounds to prevent them from being infected.  If there is any soap outside your hospital dwarves who are not injured but who are still dirty will attempt to use that soap to clean themselves.  Because of a bug this will fail and generate a canceled job message.  To fix this, forbid any soap not in your hospital.  Dwarves will then go and clean themselves at a well without needing soap.  Setting up a cleaning pool or waterfall can also help to forcibly wash off your dwarves.

there are ways (cave-ins) but those are too time-consuming.

In case of a 1x1 pit, you can either dig out (either left or up) after removing the ramp and rewalling later, or you can (using stairs  :D) build down-stairs above the ramp, removing the ramp below (note: miner gets stuck) and then placing up-stair where the ramp used to be. Then, after miner is out, designate the removal of the up-stair (d>n) and when that's done the up-stair. you will lose 2 units of stone and some mining time with this method. But who cares?

Is it normal for a cavern (the third one) to go from say... from z level 90 to -4? Because this one does...

I'm not new to the game, but i'm kinda new to the modding/perams/uploading maps thing, how do I do it? I'm not new to programming though, so you know.

I'm trying to make a pit for hostile creatures, but my miner gets stuck if I deconstruct the ramp, and I don't want to build stairs.
Remove the ramps from inside the pit, then dig your way out on either the left or the upper side. Then build a wall to fill the gap. Dwarves prefer to build from certain squares, so use that knowledge to your advantage. There's a little diagram on the forums somewhere, but I can't find it.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

just go to your DF directory, find "data" folder, find "save" folder, then zip the folder (right click>send to compressed/zipped folder) and upload the folder to a filehosting site (such as mediafire) and post the link here.

the order is: left, top, right, down, upper-left, upper-right, lower-left, lower-right. but keep in mind that constructions can only be made from up/down/left/right.

Oh, and try channeling down twice or more (your miner will be "stunned" but that does no damage) to prevent dwarves from being scared of the hostile creatures.

Hold on, having a couple problems with MediaFire not working correctly, I might take a few more minutes to post it up.

Ok, got it working, had to reload the page (the "click here to upload" button wasn't working).

Link:http://www.mediafire.com/?nloktseynvy5yfx

BTW, one of my masons JUST went into a mood, the screen is almost centered on him, he hasn't even claimed a workshop. To get to the cavern, just look a couple of levels down, you should see it at 90, or lower, you can't miss it :D.

Tell me what you think of the cavern :P.
