I can't get pressure to work right with making a well.

I have a river at ground level, and a well at -3.

How can I get water to -4 without having bubble straight up into my hospital? I'd prefer to avoid using the diagonal walls trick if possible. Can I dig it down to -5 then pump to -4?

Other than the diagonal-depressurizing trick, the only way I can think of at the moment would be to use a floodgate to only let enough water in to fill the area below the well.
Like this:
Code: [Select]
~l____ Z=-1
~l____
~l_W__
~~X~l_ Z=-4
~= Water
l= Wall
_= Floor
W= Well
X= Floodgate

I will be hosting a succession game, and am wondering how to test graphics compatibility. I use .13.18 Synergy, and am not sure how graphics packs and tilesets work, but have noted some graphics do seem to be "hard coded" after worldgen. Help with this would be much appreciated.

I think you need to delete the graphics folder in the save. but save copies, this isn't foolproof!

That simple, huh? Well, thanks, Mr. Guide.

You can use a pump to re-pressurize the water to the level you want it at. Let it fall to 1 z-level below where you want it, then place a pump into a single-tile-wide tunnel leading to where your well will be. The pump will change the pressure of the water, so it won't pop back up.

Just seems cheatery.

With using a pump, won't that flood the standing square?

Also, could I make a reactor to power it and have still not be pressurized?

Odd. Urdim Sokanid, furnace operator, reported having to rest because of wounds. She is indeed covered in blood, and her (z-enter) info lists a huge array of wounds, but if I check via v-w then she is not wounded. She is now headed to my (unfinished) hospital together with her baby, but I fear something will happen which makes the baby die, or would it simply stay with it's mother if the mother is unconscious in hospital?

Also, someone who IS genuinely wounded, yellow all over, (due to killing, single handedly, a forgotten beast whose blood I think wounded this Jeweler/Speardorf0 is simply going back to work.

Edit; ah, the operator finished resting. Right as rain. Can troops wear both greaves and boots? And what are leggings for?

HOLY FUCK, ANOTHER EDIT; THE furnace operator is back in hospital, now with all the wounds previously mentioned, and her lips (of her mouth) have rotten. Everything on her body is yellow (except for the baby) and she is being diagnosed at the moment. It was probably due to the blood of the forgotten beast.

yes, if you're using a pump to depressurize then it has to be operated by mechanics.  But then you might not want your power train to flood.  You can build another pump to transfer power, or you can have a gear assembly below the channeled out impassable tile of the pump or above it.

Greaves and leggings both protect the legs, and cannot be layered. Boots cover the feet.

You probably disable collection of wood by accident.  Press 'o', and see if it says 'Dwarves gather wood' or 'Dwarves ignore wood' on the right.  If it says 'Dwarves ignore wood' , press 'w' to enable collection of wood again.
Like I said something obvious. I was panicking my booze was running dry and the barrels were being used for my way to overzealous plant productiong. Leaving me with 500 booze, and 2200 plants, 1300 meat...
I had to make like 5 new stockpiles.

What should I do with:
Zombie Cave Ogre - kill it or goblin bait or siege breaker slower
2 Giant Moles - militia practice, siege slower, or (if you can tame them *cough*moddedout*cough*) war moles!
Cave Blob - either militia practice or siege slower
in bold  ;)

or just make a huge pyramid and put the cave blob on top. megaproject idea! (hail to the blob!)

I appreciate the help, although when i disabled the mining labors, dumped the picks, enabled the mining labors on other dwarves, and then reclaimed the picks, the new dwarves assigned to mining haven't been willing to pick the picks up. am i missing something, or is the claiming of items a bit buggy?
Are the new miners in the military?
Also, they may be waiting because they have nothing to mine, so try designating a few tiles.

thanks for the reply, but no, they are not in the military. i've also checked to see that the tiles were designated. the picks are just lying on the ground, not bring picked up
