mass-dump the cage and stuff in it (d>b>d) and then unforbid only the cage (k>cursor>d to toggle) and presto! just wait and don't atomsmash the dump. can take a while.
Is it normal to have 30 idlers and no one interested in doing sth with items inside that stupid cage?

Yes, if the things marked for dumping are forbidden.

Since goblin's equipment starts out forbidden, for the dumping from a cage thing to work, you will first need to d(esignate)>>b (reclaim) the items, and then d>>b>>(d)ump them, and (t) over the cages and remove the dumping designation from those.

That, or your 30 idlers don't have item hauling (or maybe refuse hauling, for dumping) enabled

Is it possible to manually assign job titles? It irks me when my butcher is still called a soap maker on the unit screen, even if they are still a bit better at making soap than butchery.

yes, (v) over the unit, then (z) >> (y) >> (p)rofession name

In my current fort, I don't have any armorers, furnace operators or woodcutters.
I've got ghouls, abominations, damned, succubi and the Master. Ah yes, and some Gimps.

It in NOT goblinite. It dead dwarf! And nobody is interested in doing sth.
BTW, I enabled auto backup and now I have only backup - it is impossible to save game in normal way. What can be wrong?

I think there's no way to get a corpse out of a cage. I tend to atomsmash cages that contain corpses.
Fix the burial needs afterwards by making, engraving and building a stone slab.

EDIT: if the cage is made out of metal, try smelting it at the smelter, and see if it produces a !!corpse!!

FOR !!SCIENCE!!

I have several slabs, i've alt+s'd one of them at the craftdwarfs, do I just place a slab? or do I need to place, then engrave?

Don't try to dump the corpse.  Instead, make sure it is unforbidden and not marked for dumping, and then make a graveyard stockpile and/or build some coffins and make them available for burial.  Someone should move the corpse out and put it in the stockpile or in a coffin soon.

you're doing it in the right order.. First make (at mason's), then engrave (at craftsdwarves'), then build it somewhere.

I'll try asking this again, since I haven't found an answer anywhere yet:

n my new fort my miners had an accident, incapacitating them and making them unable to work for however-long it takes them to recover from their wounds. How can I reassign their picks to other dwarves, if that's possible?

It dumps out the object it was carrying. I tried smelting a siamang child, and it jumped out after the cage was smelted.

If you have disabled their mining labor, then you need to forcibly remove(read:Dump) their picks.

I have "It is the resting place of..." on coffin, and body in cage. Arrrrgh.
BTW, slabs are ready.
Cage is wooden.

I feel as if I'm missing something here...
Great fun so far, but for some reason my dwarves have decided to stop collecting wood?
Burrows fine,
Dwarf therapisted labors and whatnot,
and there is wood outside.. maybe it'll just fix itself most stuff seems too :L

You probably disable collection of wood by accident.  Press 'o', and see if it says 'Dwarves gather wood' or 'Dwarves ignore wood' on the right.  If it says 'Dwarves ignore wood' , press 'w' to enable collection of wood again.

I appreciate the help, although when i disabled the mining labors, dumped the picks, enabled the mining labors on other dwarves, and then reclaimed the picks, the new dwarves assigned to mining haven't been willing to pick the picks up. am i missing something, or is the claiming of items a bit buggy?

Are the new miners in the military?
Also, they may be waiting because they have nothing to mine, so try designating a few tiles.
