Is there an easier way to pit hostiles than blocking the shaft with a hatch cover and cycling a lever?  my dwarves keep getting interrupted by stuff already in the pit.  I was thinking I could put a hatch 1 level below the top of the pit designation, and hostile would land on the hatch, I'd pull the lever, and then the hostile would fall, then i'd pull it again and he would be covered up.

is there an easier way?  for ex. will dwarves automatically open a hatch cover on the same z level as the pit designation and close it after tossing the guy in?

Also do any creatures devour corpses of their victims?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

No. I haven't seen ANY creature kill and then eat the corpse. If I count out my own dwarves of course. (And humans and elves when in adventure mode.)

Okay so, how do I get my hospital working? :/ I have everything except soap and thats because my stupid lye maker won't put it into a bucket.
I have 1 injured dwarf, 2 hospital staff, a nurse and a highmaster diagnostian/wounddresser he hasn't diagnosed him and its been a few days :/ Also I had to make the hospital just for this dwarf. I now have traction benches and beds but the dwarf is still on the ground. How do I treat him?

Does your hospital staff have something else to do? Does anyone have Diagnosing turned on? Is the dwarf lying in or out of the hospital? Is your hospital in an active hospital zone? Is your injured dwarf resting? Are you sure your injured dwarf hasn't been diagnosed? Does the dwarf need splints, thread or cloth that you don't have? Is your doctor injured? Does the dwarf need to be cleaned, and do you have a water source for this?

Okay so, how do I get my hospital working?

Dig a room.  Press (i), mark the entire room as a zone, press (h) to make it a hospital.  Puts beds in it.  Find a dwarf (preferably with diagnostic skill) and make him/her your chief medical dwarf.  Make sure someone's got the diagnosis labor enabled.

Optionally, you can put coffers/bags into the hospital to hold supplies.

Optionally, you can put tables and traction benches into the hospital to trigger exciting bugs.  Or maybe those have been fixed.  I'm never sure.

Do not make a stockpile for the medical goods inside the hospital.  That's what the coffers are for.

If the wounded dwarf is not in a hospital bed, I'm not sure if he'll ever get treatment.

The elephant corpse needs to be in a refuse stockpile near the butcher's shop.

Actually, it does not need to be in a stockpile at all.  It just needs to be near a butcher's shop.

It can in many cases be faster to build a butcher's shop next to the corpse, than to drag the corpse to an existing shop.  (I do that with forgotten beasts, sometimes.  Suckers are heavy!)

Yes. In the hospital. Yes. Hes unconscies on the floor. No he hasn't it says awaiting diagnosis. Probably, but I have them. No, yes, ahah. looks like I need to build a well :D

Is it possible to collapse things without miners getting owned? Hes a z level up and I've save scummed it twice both times he breaks legs even thoguh he doesn't fall :/

collapsing things generate dust which can fling things about. It's best channeling as the last action, as dust tend to go up much less.

Since upgrading to .18 (from .12), I've been having crashes maybe every other season. The only thing I've changed was the GFPS to 30, and the temp and weather to off using the lazy newb editor. I'm not doing anything crazy in game that I could think would cause a crash. Is this a known bug? Is it something I'm doing possibly?

You've done nothing wrong. I've seen it crashing couple times myself. Maybe set your save to seasonal to avoid any unnecessary fun?

Volcanoes are connected to the magma sea. So yes.

Also :
How do I manually assign?
Go to the [ s ] squads menu and choose a squad. assign them to following the route.
What button do I press. I can station them at the parts of the route, but nothing else.
I still need some help with this.
