This is what I was thinking about, but I am not entirely sure it would work for whatever reason.
Take a look here for ideas on how to catch mermaids whales.
This makes it seem like the only way to do this would be to have some sort of drowning chamber right underneath the ocean or something...

Would this work?: A large area of cage traps directly adjacent to the natural ocean on the same z-level, then line it with floodgates such that I can let the ocean water flow in as I please, then let it do so, and finally, months later, drain the thing and collect the filled cages.

well, it would be better to pump it from behind the cages (into an aquifer or off-map is preferred) to get it to constantly drain, kinda like a vacuum cleaner gone mad  ;D

technically, you could do something like this:
(side view)
Code: [Select]
         #############
~~~~~~~### %%___ TO DRAIN
~~~~___&_^^___&_ TO FORT
~~#################
& is floodgate 1-tile-wide drawbridge. ~ is water. _ is floor. # is wall. ^ is trap. %% is pump (facing right)

that should work, add more traps though obviously

whales are building destroyer. Would it lure them in if you build a workshop, then flood the workshop?

Sometimes the broker can be lazy about trading. I find this happens most often when I have a dwarf in a fey mood demanding silk cloth, the dwarven caravan is in town, and they have it.

My broker, without fail, will get a drink, go on break, and have a nap before considering going to the depot.

Whales are not BUILDINGDESTROYER at all in the current release.  In fact, there don't seem to be any aquatic buildingdestroyers in the current version.  I have an oceanside fortress with something like a dozen whales in captivity, peacefully ignoring the floodgates that seal the chamber they're held in.

The DF wiki says that hatches are like doors, but horizontal. Doors can be opened freely when water is around them, but won't close on anything deeper than 1/7 water. Are hatches the same, or can they be opened and closed at will like floodgates?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Ah, my bad. Probably something I have modded in then

usually he'll finish current job then go. Trading indeed, is very low priority (even lower then architect and clean self!!) so you should disable most of his jobs.

No, doors will close freely even if occupied by 7/7 water.  They will not close if any creature or object is in the space, but will not be held open by water.  Hatches won't be stopped from closing by water or creatures or items, since they don't block the space they are in from be occupied by a creature or item.

If I have a dwarf restrained to a rope, and deconstruct the floor under him, will he fall 3-zlevels because of the restraint, or fall all the way down?  I kind of want to create a "hanging" zone for executions.  Though either works, because falling so far will still kill him, hanging or not.

When a creature on a rope becomes airborne for any reason (including having the floor under them removed) they instantly detach from the rope.  You can't hang dwarves or anything else from ropes at the moment.
