My stills are very cluttered.  There is a stockpile nearby with only Drink (Plant) and Barrels enabled.  The dorfs are storing empty barrels there just fine, but not the booze.  What am I doing wrong?

Help me with butcheringgg!

Step 1: military kills elephant
Step 2: Go to butcher's shop, give butcher dead animal order
Step 3: URIST McButcher cancels butcher animal, needs butcher-able unrotten nearby item

why do i get that? is it the proximity to the corpses (because they are outside with my shop obviously inside)? or do the corpses instantly rot? help please!
The elephant corpse needs to be in a refuse stockpile near the butcher's shop.  Make a refuse pile that accepts corpses near your butcher's shop.  Then, turn on gathering of refuse from outside:  press 'o', 'r', 'o'.
You can also, if the corpse is relatively near to the butchers, put the stockpile directly under the corpse.

i believe i have, as all the gobbos i have ordered into the single cage have been in built cages. i'm stuck, not stupid.
What is happening is that when you order a creature in constructed cage A to be placed in constructed cage B, your dwarves split this up into two jobs:  Remove creature from cage A, place creature in cage B.  They aren't smart enough to just move the creature from one cage to another.  Now your dwarves will never intentionally just release a goblin from a cage, so when it comes time to remove them from the first cage they'll grab an empty cage from a stockpile and put the goblin in that first, then place the goblin-occupied cage on an animal stockpile.  Some time later they'll take the goblin-occupied loose cage and carry it to cage B to transfer the goblin to it.  So if you want to put all your goblins in one cage, don't bother building the cages they're already in.  Just build the destination cage, and have all the goblins in cages in an animal stockpile nearby.

What does it mean if one of your dwarves is blinking (like bright color, normal, bright, normal...)?
blue covering, legendary.
blue arrow, thirsty.
brown arrow, hungry
white arrow, drowsy
red arrow, angry.

And some more less common status. 'v'iew on your dorf's 'w'ounds for details.

't' on your still and see if the booze barrels are tasked with something. Maybe someone is thirsty? Also check if you have spare idler and spare room on your stockpile.

a flashing Z is sleeping/unconsious. a white X is winded, green X is nauseous, colored plus is a military injury

Any explaination for this? like 2/3 of the map are "no trade" and they are all properly linked.

If they have no access they wont show up to begin with. Tested with some remote region, dwarf show up as NO TRADE. Morever I've tried to trade the border of no trade and a few changed in the middle of forest or shrubland. On top of that putting embark right next to friendly cities also show as NO TRADE if it's already in the no trade region.

ok, ive just screwed up everything.
my dwarves and pets were commonly covered in various bloods so to solve this and hopefully increase my fps i built a water fall oer a heavily trafficed area and cover the ground in iron grates as much as i could. (all water lands on an iron grate and falls through to the level underneath)

my understanding was that this would take the blood off the dwarfves and pets and it would be taken into the water underneath.

instead every bit off blood that was on any pet or any dwarf has now acculated on the iron grates(water stills falls on it)
and now everything that goes through it comes out with 8 pages of blood coverings.
my fps has halved in 3 minutes.
help??
(blood tracking is turned off in the init files)

1) Pause game
2) run dfclean (rid of blood on the grate)
3) save game, backup game
4) try the blood evapourating trick I described here. This will remove blood on the body.
5) If successful, resume play
5b) if it doesn't work, give feed back and thank you for trying ;p

DFHack pack. Alternatively, turn on temperature as you run my trick, that will also make blood on the ground to evaporate if your biome isnt too cold.
