If you don't have enough water you could make a sort of caravan bay in which you place the depot, stick floodgates in front of it, let them enter it, and then close all the floodgates again so they can't leave. Starve them. :P Or you could try rigging something up with magma, but that would be harder.

also i think in my savescumming event it fucked my game up somehow.. dwarf therapist now says Urist unknownuknown for every dwarf. And now I have 3 stonecrafters?
my originial one is nearly legendary now, but 2 extra's are high master?! I only had one person stonecrafting at a time and I havn't just recieved migrants this is fucking weirrrd
Ehm, that sounds wrong. Then again, I don't really know what savescumming is. :o

I saved it. Then attacked the dwarves.
Reloaded because they killed everything and each other after they killed the caravan guards.

does anyone in the know, know how to get 2 dwarves together on purpose? (for dwarf pedgrees to make the ultimate dwarf)

how do I increase the chance of my haulers not releasing the hoardes of foxes I have in my animal stockpile? I'm moving it but they've let 2 out already :S

Right.

I was digging a well, and one of my miners decided to fall in and break half the bones in their body.. All well and good, lets get a temporary hospital set up, yaddaydda. The issue comes is that almost immediately after, all the water froze over (Which is why the well was being dug in the first place...).

I've tried digging out blocks of ice and letting them melt, but that only gives me 'stagnant water' objects, which the game doesn't treat as real water. Magma isn't available, so does anyone else have an idea for how to get some usable water?

Dig to the caverns, I guess, but that may take a while...

Dropping solid ice from a sufficient height (at least 3 z-levels) will result in it turning to water. It'll also break the floor exposing the stone below, so it's a good idea to sluice it into a nearby cistern.

Stray Black Bear (Tame) -- This thing's not gonna try to eat my butcher if he lets it out of the cage, is it?  Only Grizzlies can be trained, right?

Provided the bear didn't kill any dwarf or tame animal before it was caught it won't attack anybody. Only Grizzlies can be trained.

I want to make a drowning traptime contraption for killing caravan's I don't like. Can I use water from a murky pool or will I need a constant source? ie. cavern pool since there are no rivers on my embark.
If so how do I make a basic pump stack up from the cavern water? And how do i protect it from the likes of pond grabbers

You will need a constant source, here is a diagram of a basic 4 z-level pump stack. Repeat as necessary.


Watch out though, if anything breaks a pump, all pumps above it will come crashing down.

As I can see, you can link all the murky pools in your embark zone with channel, then you make your trade depot next to one of those and make a flooding with a pump and a windmill. Make the whole process controlled by lever in and outflow.

Rain should make your pound full for every caravan that appear.

My curiosity has been peaked by the occasional "dark human" and "dark dwarf" fortresses that crop up during worldgen. Are there any special attributes or aggressive tendencies tied to these civs?

How do I reactivate an inactive job? I'm building a Farmer's Workshop and I realized that I needed larch logs, and cut a larch tree down. However my farmer won't start the building process again. This is in Genesis 3.18.


EDIT: Nevermind. Immigrants arrived, and 5 were farmers. They finished the workshop. Thanks for the help anyways, I'll use it for future reference.
