I have a .13 (or was it .14? Whichever one never got sieges) set up as a test fortress. Best way to learn things is to do them in an environment designed for no other reason than to learn. Basically, channel a hole in the ground, dig the ground next to it connected to somewhere for your dwarves to get out, remove the ramp, build a gear assembly, build a windmill over it, then build a series of tunnels/axles to connect them to a pump. After that, pumpstack. You will probably want to build a bunch of windmills, just connect them all to the main gear assembly.

If I surround my dwarves with kittens and rainbows, can they be put on duty forever? Or is it impossible for a dwarf to be on duty forever without going crazy?

So I just had two sieges and a couple of ambushes happen. While watching my elite squad deal with the goblin bowmen, I notice something blue. It's a troll! Actually, it's five! And they're bleeding sand. Okay, weird. After they're dead though, they're all tagged as "Troll trader." What's up with that?

Also, they apparently wiped out another goblin ambush while on their way across the map.

tolkafox: Dwarves who become enraged by long duty get a negative thought, but like all negative thoughts enough positive thoughts will balance them out.
Also, dwarves who are legendary in their weapon skills (And maybe other fighting skills?) do not get affected by those particular bad thoughts.

azazel: The "sand" is probably their differently-colored blood.
Also, trolls are "intelligent", so they get random professions just like migrants.

Are you making wooden barrels/bins? I switch to copper/tin/nickel/aluminum as soon as I get my forges running (I don't really care about metal value, as long as I don't have any noble preferences). My dwarves don't need to go out anymore (except for owning goblins), I trade for all the wood. Helps me to build great forts without any serious losses.

Also, ninja'd.

I need the wood for beds and for charcoal...also...my military is completely incompetent...telling them to patrol the area to fight off the goblins will end in them getting slaughtered :s...trading for the wood sounds like a good idea...how much wood do you think i could get a year that way?

It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

I'm still having trouble with marksdwarf training. How do i get them to only train by shooting bolts. And yes, i allowed them plenty of bolts in the military supply screen.

to my knowledge is impossible to stop them from doing demonstrations...unless you put them in invidvidual squads....i doubt 1 person alone will do a demonstration but..hell...their dwarves...they attend meetings on their own and hold weddings without their bride present so...be prepared for anything...

only set them to train on the archery range and set their training schedule to inactive. They'd train on the archery range as individual training.

How do I find my current embark on the world map? I have a fortress, but if when I'm forced to abndon it, I might try reclaiming or going there as adventurer. Do I need to write down coordinates as I embark, or is there a better way?

Reclaim is automatic by selecting the "reclaim" option. For adventurer, you can talk to people in the general area until one mentions your old fort.

Anyone have guides for a fuck up like me too better understand transmitting power too pumps.
A mist generator would be awesome aswell.
I'm using the wiki but Im not at all certain where I am going wrong.

That's not exactly a "little question".  You might do better to start a dedicated thread for that one, if you really can't find an answer in the thousands of older threads.

Basically, windmills and water wheels produce power.  Axles and gearboxes can be used to transmit that power across distance.  Axles are straight, and gearboxes allow you to turn a corner.

Okay got a huge question.
Why is it when I tell my dwarves to slaughter the dwarven caravan that came in? (long story short he fucking won't trade with me. so I'm killing them all.

My dwarves start to kill each other?! My masterswordsmen just cut of my spearmens leg and got his brain smashed by my hammerlord?
WTF?!

It's called a loyalty cascade. all your dwarves that attack the dwarven caravan become enemies of the civ. while remaining of that civ. where other dudes attack them, becoming enemies of the initial attackers' civ which is their own. they basically all attack each other and die.

just savescum. and refrain from militia killing too. THERE ARE DROWNING TRAPS FOR THAT WITH NO* DRAWBACKS!
