Friendly troops and creatures are completely immune to catapult fire right?

immobilization requires a traction bench. go to the mechanic's workshop and order a traction bench [ R ]
(it will take a chair/throne, a chain/rope, a mechanism. maybe something else I'm missing.)
then build it next to the guy's bed.
Didn't work then, doesn't work now......

In frustration, I simply dug a pond beside the dwarf and filled it with water, thus enabling wound cleansing and a push into zombies cavern got me thread for suturing..... Now if my dwarves would ONLY use the damn traction bench....

Damn. Don't tell me I need to make plaster.
edit:D Just as I begun to copy and paste the pictures that would tell the condition of my dwarf..... my doctor, who has been hovering around him for a week or more now finally decides to begin dressing the wound from the cloth beside him. After the wound was dressed, a bone doctor immediately went up to him and started immobilisation.

So, I guess I learned a lesson. There IS a set order of care that needs to happen, from cleaning the patient to immobilisation and dwarves idle way too much. Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm not certain about th current version, but in 40d they were not. I'll have to test it out in my next winter* fort to be sure.

*Catapult stones have an impact point where they hit. Dwarves won't try to hit friendlies, so the only way a friendly could be hit is if they happened to be standing in the impact point. Snow reveals the impacts, so that makes testing easier.

Catapults do not currently suffer from friendly fire. Ballistae do, however.

Friendly troops and creatures are completely immune to catapult fire right?

but why would that be? Unless...

I GOTZ IT!

He's using channeling. the ramps that were made are one-way because there is space around there.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Ramp#Movement_Using_Ramps for info.

He just needs to dig a staircase close to it and put doors there on several levels (especially the bottom one). Diagrams:

where [ ^ and V ] are ramps, [ %% ] is pump, [ D ] is door, [ X ] is up-down staircase, and [ # ] is wall

The thing is that catapults just go off the map (or a max of 150 squares, whichever comes first)
Place your catapults on one end of your embark and the shooting range on the other. I think they might hit trees, no? Be careful about woodcutting in the area, otherwise either job spam or smooshed brainz.

I remember hurting my own wrestlers with catapults. yeah it was funny.

Thanks for the quick answer :)

Military related question now :)
How do I equip my dwarves for fighting?
They have leather armour available and metal armour isn't exaclty availble except for some caravan loot like a mail shirt or 2.
They also have training weapons available, which I want them to train with to increase their weapon skills.

A wolf got inside my fortress via a staircase not properly walled in, and I sent my dwarves to kill it. They destroyed it XD mfw my dwarf ripped a wolf's ear off and then proceeded to throw 3 squares by its third rear toe. But they were wrestling or hitting it, np they won, but shouldn't they be smacking it with wooden weapons?

First of all, training weapons are not actually any more effective at training than real weapons.
Also, have you assigned the equipment to them in the [m]ilitary->[e]quip screen?

to train survival you could also make a "danger room" (some people count as an exploit though)

Thats the plan i'm just settling defenses up front first before I make a danger room.
I know but if they train with regular weapons they can get injured can't they?

Strange question, sorry.  Is there any one tile object, plant, tree, rock, unmined tile, creature or what have you that looks like an I?  An i, I, i with that little dash thing above it's head, all work.  As long as it can be made, tamed or found in Fortress Mode or created in Object Testing Arena.

I only have 3 people in my military since its still an early fort, one of whom is a markdwarf, do I need to move him into a different squad or will all three of thme happily train together? Them sparring and him shooting a target?

a support. imps too I think (fire imps from magma)
and whatever one of the symbols is for a forest retreat

yep, but I suggest you make 2/3 squads (depending on weapons) as the marksdwarf could get his hammer skills up (they like bashing things  :'()
