At a mason's use alt+s to make a slab. And at a craftsdwarf shop let an engraver engrave the slab with the ghost's name. Then build the slab and your ghost problem is solved.

I need ideas for an early threat detection system.  Ambushes dont get noticed until their frighteningly close to my fortress which can easily be fatal for unlucky dwarves, and my military is a mob of bafoons that goes to sleep the second goblins show up.  Ideas?

the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Build a long entrance hallway, and restrain an animal at the entance.
The animal will detect ambushes, and the long entrance should give you enough time to seal up.

And ninja'd.
Again.

the problem with that is that itd either take years to finish or itd have to be close to my fortress meaning my guys still have to go outside to get wood....really...my guys going outside for woodcutting is the only reason they have to go outside at all.  I need a way to keep my woodcutters alive while still getting a steady flow of wood

Attach wardogs to them.
Include barracks patrol to where they have to cut wood :)

Are you making wooden barrels/bins? I switch to copper/tin/nickel/aluminum as soon as I get my forges running (I don't really care about metal value, as long as I don't have any noble preferences). My dwarves don't need to go out anymore (except for owning goblins), I trade for all the wood. Helps me to build great forts without any serious losses.

Also, ninja'd.

This is going to be a really stupid question, but hey...

Been running my fortress for 2 or 3 years before I realise I've seen no sign of goblins. So, I guess the fort's bugged, make a new one - same happens again. On the embarking selection-y screen, goblins are mentioned on the Civ tab but with a long red line next to them (I have no idea what this means).

Is there a setting somewhere that enables/disables seiges? It doesn't seem to be under init or d_init but all my worlds seem to suffer the same problem. Thanks in advance, sorry for being n00by ^^;

Edit: I see the options that say
[INVADERS:YES]
so unless that's supposed to be a no (??) is it something else?

Goblins seem quite rare on occasion. Get to about 90 dwarves and wait a few years.

Can dwarves wear chain leggings and greaves at the same time?

In my experience Goblins, if your site doesn't neighbor them (which it doesn't seem to be able to in this version) will take as many as 6 years to start prodding your fortress. You'll have plenty of time to prepare, but they WILL come eventually.

No. Layering only works on the body and (possibly) the head.

Ah, thank you. I knew you could layer things like caps and helms along with chainmail and breastplates, but I forgot about the greavs and leggings.

So the wiki is incorrect about wearing many layers of cloth with armor? What is the optimal armor layout, consisting of craftable items, and one that usually works then?

Why is it worthy to make obsidian? I have more stone than I need, and obsidian swords are not that good. Why bother, other than for !SCIENCE! and lolz?
