Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

okay so my first strange mood in this fortress I forgot about him completely, que, going insane then strucken by meloncholy, is there nothing I can do? I don't care he isnt too valuable of a dwarf anyway
by god I feel sorry for him now. His relationships, he has no friends, one passing acquaintance. Sure thats good for my fortress as no dwarves will miss him, but still :/

He will never recover. He will incinerate, splatter, drown or starve himself to death.

Do the minerals and whatnot shown on the embark screen for a specific location describe exactly what the layer composition of that location is like?

Red Sand
Claystone
Claystone
Claystone
Diorite

Would this hypothetical thing mean that under the red sand there're three layers of claystone and then diorite after that?

Thanks for the asnwer magma, god knows what he'll do hes just moping around, :L

Onto another question :)
training tamed animals?
I have a few dogs lieing around but they've been adopted, does this mean I can't train them into war dogs? It won't let me anyhow. I also have a horse, It can be trained into a war horse according to wiki, but how? It won't let me :/
Should there be an option 'train war horse' ? or 'train war animal? '
all i have is hunting dog or war dog :(

Adopted animals can't be trained. Maybe after their owners die. And for the horse, try train war dog/animal/whateverwarcreatureitshows.
Oh and...
He will never recover. He will incinerate, splatter, drown or starve himself to death.
None of these is probably right. They die of dehydration 1st.

Each line on the embark screen can indicate multiple layers of soil or rock.  Soil is usually only one or two layers deep, but rock can be many more.  So if you have a single line saying 'diorite', it might actually mean half a dozen Z-layer thickness of diorite layers.

Not if you have an open magma pit, they don't. Or a really high drop. Or a water filled moat.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Don't put them up for adoption in the first place. z, select animals, then make them all unavailable. There's nothing you can do for animal that come as pets of an immigrant.

They provide fodder that follows the dwarves everywhere so when the inevitable attack happens, your dwarf runs to safety.

Why does my mother civilization have access to plump helmets, rock nuts, pig tails, cave wheat, dimple cups but no sweet pods? What the hell went wrong in there?

So your fortresses don't have openly accessible water and/or magma? And you don't have goblin pits? I never ever had an insane dwarf dry up...
