It seems that digging rooms in soil is largely useless. Well, except for rigging up elaborate entrances to hideously befall invaders.

Is it worth just digging straight down to rock at the start of a fortress? Maybe with some dirt hallways at the top for later defensive use?
I use soil layers for stockpile space and miner training.

It seems when my marksdwarfs go to train, they strip off all their clothes, and won't use bolts but will grab a crossbow. What am i doing wrong?

Check their uniform or (e) equip is set to over-clothing rather than replace. Also on the ammunition screen, assign them two piles, one for training and one for combat (even if you only have one time of ammo or you want them to pick their own ammo from the whole arsenal).

I usually just restrict them to bone for training.

Thank you, floodgate... installed!

Now, I need to channel down some water from one of these murky pools before everyone dies of thirst. Luckily, it rains literally every two minutes here, so it should be a reliable source, and I am going to take a little time to make a good, accessible aqueduct.

Question: If I am channeling water from a murky pool above sea level, to a reservoir below sea level, do I need to use constructions on every level sea level and below, or will it be fine without old-fashioned rough stone and dirt?


EDIT: And another question has reared it's ugly head... why do I have three dwarven countries, each with the same name? Does this imply that one empire conquered the others?

I've got a fox (two) that I want to tame, but it doesn't show up on the tame a large animal and tame a small animal gives an error. How do I tame it?

fox is an exotic pet.  it needs a dungeon master.  its tame large you want though, tame small is vermin

It's probably in the wrong place to ask but since I am tired and wanna get a quick answer I don't feel like going anywhere else.
What is the difference between a succession game and a community fortress? I actually need explanations of what they both are because I think they are both the same thing.

I believe succession games are those that are played in turn by different people, each playing a specified amount of fort-time before handing it off to the next in line.

Community fortress, as I've heard, is one where one person plays it but the events are described and wrought into song and tale by the community.

That solves me thinking everything was succession games.
The community fortresses sound more interesting though.
I have this problem that I love playing DF but I have no ideas what to do there. I can just sit there, make everyone have a luxurious life. Everyone having big rooms with everything they have ever wanted and more but it's just boring. I could make some megaprojects but I have no ideas what to make.
It seemed that you were unsure about the community games. Does anyone have a more sure answer?

Community games are games where there is fort, and people can get dwarves named for them. EG : There is fort Bottleneck, a community fortress. People will ask to have a dwarf named after them.

No, the magma has to share the same tile as the wooden object for said object to combust.
