do war dogs in cages detect sneaky people? and can they be attacked, the wiki isnt particularrly coherent on this
can they detect the tiles adjacent to them?
Also can building destroyers break them open from the outside?

I think they have a pretty strong sight range, and can see better than dwarves do.  Don't count them on catching everyone but it's pretty good.  If you _are_ going to do that set up, make sure to use walls/constructed walls, and carve fortifications.  Fortifications cannot be broken by building destroyers, but they can be shot through and dogs can see through them.  If you use that set up expect the dog to die 80% if there are archers/crossbowmen in the enemy group.

My question is still up, anyone else has had any creature falling into a fortification without a floor above it?

Ach, I didn't see that "caged bit...  sorry, I know nothing about buildings and whatnot.  I can tell you that Building Destroyers will destroy ALL buildings, and cages are indeed buildings.  So if the cage is built to a spot, a [BUILDINGDESTROYER:2] (not sure about 1) can destroy it if they come in contact with it.

To nickdx, I'm fairly sure that a fortification has to be a wall before it's a fortification.  That means there should automatically be a floor above it, in the same sense all walls should have floors above them.

You can build fortifications, but I'm not sure if they have floors above them or not.
Anyway, I assume that a creature stuck in a fortification will stay there until pushed out with water.

You can build fortifications from blocks or stones directly, instead of constructing walls and carving them (though making the walls does produce the floor above, as well as give your engravers more to do). I believe the keystrokes are [ b ]-[ C ]-[ F ]. As to dwarves falling on them, never had it happen so I couldn't say. I know that stones will get stuck in them, such that the fortification has to be removed before the stone can be retrieved.

I don't believe creatures in a cage can be shot at; otherwise my dogbombs wouldn't work on archers, nor would my markdwarves stop shooting the goblins once they got trapped.

Fortifications act like trees as far as creatures falling on them.  A creature which falls onto a fortification will not fall into the fortification, but will be stuck on top of it.  If there is an adjacent floor or other walkable tile, they will be able to move off the fortification.  If not, they will remain stuck and unable to get down.  Fortifications support creatures, but aren't counted as floor that can be walked on.

Creatures in cages can't be attacked, and can't attack anything.  I don't think they spot sneaking invaders either, but I haven't tried to test this.

Building destroyers will 'destroy' a constructed cage, but I don't know that this will let the creature inside the cage out.  I suspect that it will just result in the cage becoming unbuilt with the creature still contained within it.  If the cage is actually destroyed the creature inside will probably vanish, similar to when a cage is atomsmashed or frozen in ice.  I have not actually tested this however.

In the three fortresses i've built on the last version, the first one was overrun by the second siege, the second fortress had no sieges for about 6 years, when two forgotten beasts trampled over 40 of its 140 citizens, and 20 more died of insanity and other stuff, and now, the third fort is reaching its third year and still no sieges or any goblin snatchery...

I didn't check the civizilations for the first and the second fort, but on the third one I'm sure I saw Elves, Humans, Dwarfs AND Goblins (with a red ------ beside it), so I know there are goblins here somewhere.

Well, my question is: WHERE ARE THE SIEGES? Do they really take this long to happen?

Also, as I'm writing this a child was taken by a fey mood and claimed a craft shop...

Sieges are dependant on wealth and population.
The default pop cap for sieges is 80 dwarves, I think, not sure about wealth.

The goblins may be far away from you. Distance is figured into how long it takes before you're beset by siege, as well as the wealth of your fortress.

I just hit 80+ dwarves in the third fort, but I'm sure I have wealth enough, as I went to the magma sea fairly quickly and created a huge amount of silver and copper trap components, by a master weaponsmith... They are about 10k each and I had more than 30 of them...

The wealth they search will surely be their demise!
