I picked out some great grubs for my military who are all massive muscle-bound freaks, and I want to turn them into massive super-dwarvenly tough muscle-bound freaks through pump operating. Possible?

I think only training the military skills raises attributes. In a previous version, all skills raised the attributes, so you could have a legendary gemcutter with Superdwarvenly attributes. If I remember right though, it's only military dwarves that gain it now.

You're probably right. It seems strange that something like pump operating would not build up the physique of those dwarves (it probably wouldn't make them tough or anything - but maybe something like blacksmithing should do that).

Anyway, I just looked at one of my careerist mil dwarves and now she is 'basically unbreakable, absolutely inexhaustible..' etc etc. So good to know that you can still pump them up (don't know if negative traits like 'slow to heal' can be reversed).

Kicked all my gym freaks off the pumps and into a private military complex to turn them into specimen fighters...

I recently discovered that if you lead a party to an abandoned fortress in Adventure Mode and lose/kill-off your own adventurer there, his party will still be present and (as long as their civilizations aren't at war, I imagine) friendly toward new settlers when you the reclaim the site.

Does this mean that our nineteen stalwart, hero-tier human "mercenaries" will fend off gobbo attacks that path by them?

can I chain multiple animals to a single rope/chain?

I'm sure by the time toady gets too old to program, DF will have reached a stage where as it is sentient enough to program itself.
It won't program itself, it'll be too busy taking breaks and attending parties to code.

Nope.  Assigning the 2nd will release the 1st.

Multiple animals on one restraint requires cages.

Do armor stands and/or weapon racks hold the obvious items the way cabinets hold clothes?

Or did I just dream about reading that at one point?

If constructed fortifications do not create floor tiles above'em like walls do, then what happens if a goblin falls some Z levels into a fortification? Will he be displaced to the fortification level on the nearest walkable tile or will he be stuck inside the fortification?

No, only on soil or rough stone. Constructed floors are unable to handle any farming at all

You can try making a little animal farm for meat purposes, and put an open space in the middle of the sub with a well on it...
They may not have booze but might settle for plain water... Unless you're making a magma sub

can they detect the tiles adjacent to them?
Also can building destroyers break them open from the outside?
