1 world tile = (map width/16)*(map height/16) region tiles
1 region tile = 16*16 local tiles
1 local tiles = 48*48 ingame tiles
1 ingame tile ~= 1.5*1.5*4.5m

Another war animal question.  Lets say the enemy sends a war horse at you.  You promptly pick them off their mount somehow without killing the war horse.  Would it be possible, if I got it into a cage trap, for that horse to be converted by training it at the Kennels (taming it, really).

I don't think so, sorry.
But I could be wrong.

In 40d, training such a horse will first appear to work correctly (your dwarves will treat it as friendly, and the description will say "(tame)") but it will attack traders and other neutrals. It's still butcherable, though, and as long as you keep its cage near the butchers and away from trade depots you should be fine.

If it has attacked or killed one of your dwarves or pets, it will still be tameable, but will then attack your dwarves if released from the cage (which is dangerous because your civilians treat it as friendly, and will not run away from it)

In DF2010, I'm not sure if the same bug still exists.

Let's turn that on its head a bit.  If I have the insane luck to catch a male war horse and a female war horse, keep them in a tightly packed room for a while, and wait for them to have children, will the child be convertable to myside?  If so, will the parents trample it to death on birth/

Ugh this is annoying, I might aswell ask.
So I was playing an old version of DF I assume, because after updating the new back button is esc
so instead of tapping space bar I have to reach for esc, as a lazy person I'm anonyed :P anyway to change this or do I just have to deal with it?

Yes. And they will trample on birth. Note: they don't need to be in the same room. All creatures reproduce with spores.
Also: once creature(s) are pregnant, they will give birth when it is time, even if they are kept in cages.  If they are in cages, they cannot trample the resulting offspring.

In fact, if a siege lasts long enough, the animals in the field will give birth and the resulting melee will be rather entertaining.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Thanks :)
Another question, if I dig out say a 10x10 area one z layer underground, expose the area to sunlight, so its classed as above ground, then put a roof over it, can I then grow crops on it without having to irrigate? (it being a soil layer obviously)

Yes, but only aboveground crops.

Goblins.

After an ambush that was detected after it had snuck some distance into my fort I had a goblin escape into the underworld.

D'you think it's possible for goblins to emerge from the underworld as well?

can pumps be built on top of one another or do they need a floor tile between them?

I'm sure by the time toady gets too old to program, DF will have reached a stage where as it is sentient enough to program itself.
It won't program itself, it'll be too busy taking breaks and attending parties to code.
