Can goblins still come in a serene area?

Oh yes.  As long as they have a land route to you, they will find you.  During embark check to see what civilizations can access the site by pressing 'tab' until you see a list that starts with 'dwarves'.

My dwarves are refusing to mine out this room.  They are not restricted by a burrow, they are miners, they have picks, theres is nothing causing them to cancel the task, they have access to the room, their not doing anything else, and there are no warm or wet rocks nearby.  How can i fix this?
If they are in the military and they dont have extra picks, they'd consider the picks on their hands weapons and not digging tools. Hope that help

So I bought some dogs and horses to make up some breeding pairs from the dwarven caravan. They're in cages.

The wiki says to use the [q] button on the cage, then [a] to pick the animals and [Enter] to get them out.

[q] doesn't do anything though. It just highlights the animal stockpile. Even when I remove the pile, then try it, the [q] won't jump to any of the cages.

How do I get them out?

You have to [ b ]uild the ca[j]es first.
(Yes, that is a "j", not a "g".)

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

In a recent goblin siege, gobbos mounted on giant rats, cave crocs, and jabberers walked onto cage traps and got their mounts boxed up. Now, I've read people say things to the effect that animals can't be tamed "once they've tasted dwarf blood," but these ones never fought or even saw a dwarf before getting trapped. They're still listed in the unit menu as "caged prisoner"s; can I tame these things, or are they hopeless?

When you say build, do you mean from the [ b ]uild->[C]onstructions menu? Because you need the [d]esignations->[ u ]pward staircase menu.
Also, make sure the upward staircase is directly below the downward staircase.

Five questions, all relating to training war animals:

I have a war grizzly bear and a war giant eagle.  I want the giant eagle, not the dog, for my axedwarf.  Is there a way to set which one of the war beasts he receives, or is it just random?

If I want to train just a grizzly bear, and not a cuddly dragon, is there a way to choose which animal to train at the kennels?  The only thing I can think of is caging up all of the animals that are [TRAINABLE] except for the grizzly bear.

If I have a war Giant Lion on a recruit, and decide I want someone else to grab the Lion, is there a way to reassign the Lion?  Or is an unfortunate accident the only way?

Say I have a 999 year Dragon in my fort that I've caught.  If I keep it around for another few years, is it possible to grow into its adult form and become fully grown?

Lastly, do owners get comforting thoughts from their war animals, as they would if they were a normal pet?  Or are the war animals too battle hardened to be kitten-like anymore?

That's correct, the downward staircase is build as the floor of the top level. The blower level is still blocked by a wall. In order for your dwarf to go down, below the downstair (currently a wall) it must be an up stair or better yet, up/down stair. You can do this by designate those stair and they should start carving. Carving staircase is also considered digging, so when done, the ore/rock will be left at the bottom of the stair case.

It's random, although the topmost creature on your z-animal list will likely be picked first.

Yes you need to cage the animals you dont want to train

If I have a war Giant Lion on a recruit, and decide I want someone else to grab the Lion, is there a way to reassign the Lion?  Or is an unfortunate accident the only way?
You need to kill the guy, unfortunately. However, seeing how you are in the tropic, you can breed giant lions eventually.

Say I have a 999 year Dragon in my fort that I've caught.  If I keep it around for another few years, is it possible to grow into its adult form and become fully grown?
Yes, it'd take 1 more year supposedly. Beware of dragon (friendly) fire.

Lastly, do owners get comforting thoughts from their war animals, as they would if they were a normal pet?  Or are the war animals too battle hardened to be kitten-like anymore?
They get comforting thought from them as normal. They also get comforting thought just from passive by stray animals. Do note that it seem to make them less likely to get death tolerance.

Thanks for the help, Rexfelum. The next time I am in the desert I will try your suggestion and let you know if it works.

anyone? :/ Is it possible to find an area with a moderate/warm climate without an aquifier with flux available :S
or would that be like the holy grail or something?

From my experience, the place you are looking for is often going to be a forest or well-forested hill tile adjacent to a mountain range, with a brook, river, or stream cutting through (this is especially the case if you generate a world using the PerfectWorld generator found on the wiki or in the mod section of these forums). The hill or forest is more likely to have good drainage, along with all the wood, vegetation, and wildlife you need for a good time, and the mountain certainly won't have an aquifer. 5/10 ten times, I've found that my mountain is even comprised vastly of obsidian, which is good for early weapons and revenue, and usually indicates that there is an invaluable magma pool deep below the surface. If you like, just nestle up in that mountain's flux-filled bosom and make yourself at home.

Another question for whoever doesn't mind.

I recently began playing the Genesis mod, and like some of the concepts and especially the increased amount of wildlife and wild life graphics. However, I am not a big fan of the rest of the tileset. Is it possible to simply overwrite the terrain graphics with another from, say, Mayday or the Synergy set? If so, would this be as simple and copy-paste, or am I about to destroy my DF folder?

Im currently trying to assign some armor to my miners, but want them to remain inactive so that they can still work, but even with 'Inactive = uniformed' they just dont want to wear this nice steel platemail while digging and instead now run over a glacier, wearing nothing but a pick and a coating of yeti blood.

mining has its on uniform, which's precisely what you saw.

YOu can ask in the genesis mod thread. I doubt it, however.
