It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Are you talking about the two or three wall tiles completely surrounded by other walls on the center west side?  Those aren't getting built because there is no way for dwarves to reach them, having completely surrounded them with constructed walls.  That's not a bridge, that's a mass of walls you've designated to be built.

okay, so i'm new only been playing off and on for a few days, got the basic grasp, I'm using this tutorial http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/21/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-7-%E2%80%9Ca-mighty-fortress%E2%80%9D/ thats the step i'm up to,
I understand the immigration waves, and I have a few questiosn relating to that, and another basic question
1.) Do immigrates come and work for you and live with you permenently? or do they just leave eventually?
2.) My game is paused as I just got flashing red messages tellling me of a kobold theif in my fortress so what do I do? how do I attack it?
3.) I'm trying to build stairs downwards, I've done it fine so far, but my miners won't go and dig it out.. what gives? are they lazy or busy or something I don't understand they have nothing else to be doing, they just keep running around the living area, in and out of other peopels rooms?

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

The immigrants are your people now.  They're there to stay.

Now that it's been spotted, the kobold thief will flee for its life.  The same goes for goblin snatchers.  It's safe enough to let them go empty-handed, but if you want to chase it, there's a good military quickstart guide on the wiki under the name of Attack.  If you get ambushed by goblins or kobolds, though, they really are trying to kill you.

They may not be able to reach where you've asked them to dig.  I can't see your computer from here so I have no idea whether they really can.

thanks :) I figured out what was wrong but it brings me to ask antoher 2 questions :S ( i'll read the wiki about it, he got away as I have no military..)
1.) Whats the difference between using d, j to make and up/downstaircase, or using b, C, x to place a staircase?
2.) I currently have an elven caravan in my depot, but it won't let me trade? I pressed request trader, nothing. its my miner who is the broker? He's not currently mining, all the goods have been moved to the caravan.

Thanks in advance :D this game is pretty awesome I look forward to not sucking at it

Designating is like carving the stairs, b>C is like constructing them. That's why you can't designate up stairs on places you dug out, because there's no room to dig the stairs. Constructing takes materials, designating doesn't. Designating them also uses the mining job, constructing them uses masonry.

1. d j digs a hole with a stairway. You can only do it on tiles you haven't mined out, and it uses the mining skill. b C x builds a stairway out of some material you have. It'll use one stone, log, block, or metal bar. You can only do it on places you have mined out (or where there was not rock to start with) and it uses masonry.

2. Your miner/broker is busy doing something. It could be something vitally important, something useless (ie: partying, drinking), or something annoyingly trivial (ie: putting a seed in a bag).

To get him to do the job you may have to disable all his labors, and tell your dwarves to stop moving anything new to the depot. Also make sure you've actually asked him to trade. Several times I've been very pissed at an idling non-trading Broker who wasn't supposed to trade.

Alternately you could suspend every job in the fortress, allow non-brokers to trade, and declare the first guy who does the job broker. This works best if your miner/broker doesn't have the appraise skill.

Use Dwarf Therapist. There's a forum thread somewhere.

You need both up and down stairs.

If you want to disable labors for your broker you have to go do each one individually. This is much easier using the keyboard. Hit enter, =, enter, etc. until everything's off.

If you want to do it for everyone you'll have to repeat the process. In that case your best bet is to go to all the workshops and manually suspend every job. You can verify jobs are suspended from the <j>ob list.

Thanks again :) I have dwarf therapist, it doesn't load, does it matter that i'm using a texture pack?
I solved it eventually by selecting anyone may trade, it was pointless anyway all they had was junk :/ or so I think :L they could have someonthing good for all I know, I narrowly remembered not to offer them my maple bin full of limestone crafts :D No more questions for now me thinks :) just waiting for immigration

I think it needs updating due to the newer version. There's instructions somewhere in the thread.
